London serial murder accused Stephen Port makes first court appearance

Tuesday, October 20, 2015

A London man charged on Sunday with drugging and murdering four men made his first court appearance yesterday. Stephen Port, 40, was remanded to appear before a higher court tomorrow.

Port faces four counts of murder and four counts of “administering a poison with intent to endanger life or inflict grievous bodily harm”. He is alleged to have administered overdoses of recreational drug GHB. He allegedly murdered the men at his home before dumping the bodies, after finding victims online using gay dating services.

Three of the deaths were last year. Anthony Patrick Walgate, 23, was found dead on June 19, 2014 in Cooke Street. Port lives in Cooke Street. The other three alleged victims were found in the vicinity of St Margaret’s Church on North Street. Gabriel Kovari, 22, was discovered dead on August 28. Daniel Whitworth, 21, was found dead the following month on September 20. Fourth alleged victim Jack Taylor, 25, was found a year later on September 14.

Whitworth and Kovari were known to each other, according to testimony at inquest. The Metropolitan Police has referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission concerning what police called “potential vulnerabilities in [our response] to the four deaths.” Police did not initially link the deaths.

Special needs teacher Port, who was guarded by three officers in the dock, spoke in court to confirm his identity. He did not indicate if he will deny the offences. He was arrested following a police appeal to trace a man seen with Taylor shortly before his death.

Police at the time released security footage of Taylor’s movements, with an officer telling the press “the man captured on CCTV may well be the last person to talk to Jack.” The four deaths were finally linked and passed to the Metropolitan Police’s serious crime investigators on Wednesday last week.

The Magistrates’ Court ordered Taylor to appear at the Old Bailey, a famed London courthouse, tomorrow. He spent the hearing holding one arm, and repeatedly looking at the floor, whilst clad in a grey tracksuit given to him by the authorities holding him.

America’s ‘Announcer Guy’; Don La Fontaine

America’s ‘Announcer Guy’; Don LaFontaine

by

Art Gib

“In a world . . .” that is saturated with television, radio commercials and movie trailers, there remains one man whose omnipresence reigns supreme; Don LaFontaine, the Announcer Guy.

For decades movie goers and television watchers have been familiar with ‘the announcer guy.’ We are so accustomed to his deep rich voice narrating the opening scene that he seems as much a staple part of any movie as the credits. It’s almost strange to think that there is really a person behind that disembodied voice, and even more strange to realize that for the last forty years it has been the voice over talent of primarily one man; Don LaFontain.

In many ways, LaFontain defined the voice over talent industry. Most studios are willing to pay hefty fees for the voice over talent of LaFontain, as adding a voice over by LaFontain has been shown to significantly increase the prestige of any film that might otherwise have been considered mediocre. LaFontain immortalized the phrase “In a world where . . .” for opening scenes, which has now become a cliche. Several voice over actors, the most well known of whom are Ashton Smith, Hal Douglas and Peter Cullen, have built their careers imitating LaFontain.

Don LaFontain began his career in 1964 as a recording engineer producing promo spots for the National Recording Studios. While working on the western Gunfighters of Casa Grande, LaFontain had to step in for a voice over actor who couldn’t make it. The client was very pleased with his work and LaFontain’s voice over career was launched.

Since then, LaFontain’s signature deeply dramatic voice over style has been in such high demand that he reportedly voices sixty promotions a week, sometimes even thirty-five a day. In order to accommodate his busy recording schedule, LaFontain is known for employing a limo driver so he doesn’t have to waste time parking on his way to recording studios. For the last few years however, LaFontain has done most of his voice over work from the comfort of his Hollywood Hills multi-million dollar home in his personal recording studio.

Because of his huge and long lived presence in audio media, LaFontain is the most parodied of any voice over talent. The trailer for The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy gives a definition for what a trailer is, saying the narrator “will normally employ a deep voice that sounds like a seven-foot-tall man who has been smoking cigarettes since childhood.” This is not only a blatant reference to Don LaFontain, but the voice narrating is a clear parody of LaFontaine by fellow voice over artist Ashton Smith.

Some of LaFontain’s best known work is The Godfather, Jeopardy!, the Batman movies, and America’s Most Wanted.

Football: Barça centre-back Piqué extends contract until 2022

Tuesday, January 30, 2018

Yesterday, Catalan football club FC Barcelona officially announced the Spanish centre-back Gerard Piqué signed a contract extension which runs through June 2022. “If I complete this contract I will be 14 years as a professional at Barcelona” ((es))Spanish language: ?Si cumplo este contrato, serán 14 años de carrera profesional en el Barça, the Spanish international said after the contract extension.

30-year-old Piqué joined Blaugrana through the youth ranks of La Masia in 1997 and made his professional debut for Barcelona on August 13, 2008. In his tenure at Camp Nou, the Spaniard international has won three UEFA Champions League titles, six Spanish LaLiga titles, five Copa del Rey trophies and three FIFA Club World Cups.

Making his international debut in 2009, a year after he returned to Spain after spending four years at Manchester United, Piqué has 94 international caps, and has won the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, as well as the UEFA Euro 2012 trophy with La Roja. He added, “I can only see myself in a Barça shirt. If I had not extended my contract then I would have stopped playing because I only play football because I play for Barça” ((es))Spanish language: ?Sólo me veo vistiendo la camiseta del Barça. Si no hubiera renovado dejaría de jugar al fútbol porque sólo me veo jugando con esta camiseta.

The Importance Of Ac Installation In San Antonio Tx For Your Health

byadmin

If you have ever been to Texas, you know how hot the summer months can get there. For this reason, it is very important to have functioning air conditioning in your home to keep it cool and comfortable. Proper AC Installation in San Antonio TX is important for everyone, but it is especially important for people who have medical conditions that reduce their tolerance for heat, as high temperatures without air conditioning can negatively affect people with certain health problems.

Even for people without any significant medical problems, the hot and humid climate of some parts of the world would make them unlivable without some form of climate control. For people in full health, high heat and humidity can cause cloudy thoughts, irritability and fatigue. These conditions can make even the simplest daily tasks a chore without air conditioning. AC Installation in San Antonio TX helps to ensure that you are comfortable in your home and never struggling to get through the day because of high temperatures.Dehydration is a serious concern if you do not have air conditioning in your home. Because sweat is about 95 percent water, it is very easy to become dehydrated in environments where you would be sweating constantly. In excessive heat such as this, it is recommended that you are drinking at least 10 ounces of water every 10 to 15 minutes. Having adequate air conditioning in your home can alleviate these concerns.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are two of the biggest dangers associated with prolonged exertion in a hot environment. The risk of heat exhaustion is directly related to the heat index, or how hot it feels inside of your home. When the heat index is over 90 degrees, heat exhaustion can set on in as little as an hour. If your home is not properly cooled, you should be watching for symptoms of heat exhaustion such as headache, nausea, severe fatigue and excessive thirst.

Having an air conditioner installed by a professional HVAC company is the most important thing you can do to keep your home comfortable and safe no matter where you live or which season it is.

Sam Brownback on running for President, gay rights, the Middle East and religion

Sam Brownback is perplexed. The U.S. Senator from Kansas and Presidential candidate is a Republican whose politics—he is against marriage for gay people, he is against abortion, and he has a clean image in a party tainted by scandal—should speak favorably to the party’s base. But it has not. “I’m baffled by that myself,” Senator Brownback told Wikinews reporter David Shankbone. “We haven’t been able to raise money.”

A recent poll in Iowa has put him in eighth place, with 2% supporting his campaign. “If we don’t finish fourth or better in Iowa…we’ll pull out.”

Senator Brownback’s relationship with God infuses almost every answer you find below. Although he doesn’t feel “competent” to explain why God would dislike gays, he does feel strongly that allowing two men or two women to enter into the union of marriage will destroy it for heterosexuals. Pointing to the research of Stanley Kurtz at the Hoover Institution, Brownback asserts that Northern Europeans have “taken the sacredness out of the institution.”

In the interview, Senator Brownback discusses the tug-and-pull that befalls him when his constituents show up at his office and say, “Look, I’m a conservative, but we need this bridge, we need this subsidy, we need this hospital.” Brownback feels this spending system needs to be changed; however, when it comes to energy policy, Brownback is there for his constituents. David Shankbone asked the Kansas Senator, a supporter of cellulosic ethanol, why he doesn’t support the lowering of tariffs on sugar since sugar ethanol delivers 8 times the energy output of cellulosic ethanol. Brazil, in particular, has become energy independent because of its sugar ethanol program. It’s cheaper to produce, and there is vastly more bang for the buck in sugar fuel than in corn fuel; an entire country no longer needs to import oil because of it. Federal tariffs currently make sugar ethanol too expensive in the United States. “You’re going to kill the ethanol industry here just as it gets going,” was Senator Brownback’s response. However, there is a debate over whether the process to make corn ethanol uses more energy than the ethanol itself produces.

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with Senator Sam Brownback.

Floor Lamp What To Look For When Buying?

By David Hartel

Floor lamp can be a great lighting fixture, which can serve both functional and decorative purposes.

If you are looking to buy a floor lamp there are a couple of things you should consider that will help you get the right one for your needs. So, what are the three things? Maximum bulb wattage, type of lamp and switch.

Maximum Bulb Wattage

Checking the floor lamp’s maximum allowed bulb wattage is crucial. It will help you decide whether the lamp is suitable for your specific purpose. If you need a light to create a warm, relaxing ambience in the room, a lamp with a low maximum allowed bulk wattage like 30W should

be fine for you. However, if you need a light for specific tasks like reading or writing, you should go for a light that can take much stronger bulbs, preferably minimum 60W bulbs. This will assure your eyes will not get tired after a short time, which is the case when a bulb is too weak for a task.

You should never exceed the lamp’s maximum rated wattage, because that’s the most heat, that the construction of the lamp can take before it starts to meld down, or before it burns into flames depending on the lamp’s construction.

Type of Lamp

Consider what type of floor lamp will be best for your needs. Ponder some questions: What do you need the lamp for? What will be the main job of the lamp? What type of lighting do you need? General lighting, area lighting, ambient lighting, task lighting, accent lighting? In what room are you going to place the light? Living room, bedroom, hallway, entryway, dining room, kitchen, bathroom? In what part of the room will you place the lamp? In a corner, in the middle, at a sofa, at table, at a window? Knowing the answers to the questions will help you choose the right type of the lamp. For example, an arch floor lamp can be ideal for task lighting like reading, a torchiere lamp is a great ambient lighting source, which can create a warm and inviting atmosphere in the room, a gooseneck lamp may be a perfect task lighting fixture and a console light may work great for area lighting.

Switch

You should also consider a switch type as a part of your floor lamp buying process. There are two basic types of switches: those that enable you to regulate the amount of light and those that do not have such an option. Having a lamp with an adjustable switch gives you much more flexibility in tasks you can use the lamp for and at the same time gives you a greater control over your electricity bills. However, fixing this type of switches in case of any faults may be more costly and more time consuming that a repair or a replacement of simple on and off switches. So before buying lamps with the adjustable types of switches like: dimmers and solid state switches you should check if the replacements are easily available in case they break. Otherwise you may need to get rid of the floor light and switch altogether.

So, if you carefully consider the above three factors; maximum bulb wattage, type of lamp and switch, you will drastically increase your chances of getting the right floor lamp for your needs.
