Italian police charge homeless local with murder of US exchange student

Friday, July 8, 2016

On Tuesday, Italian police charged homeless forty-year-old Massimo Galioto with the aggravated murder of Beau Solomon, a college student from Wisconsin, US. The police arrested the man after finding the student’s body in the Tiber River in Rome on Monday. The defendant has attorney Michele Vincelli.

According to reports, Massimo Galioto is homeless and lived in a tent under a bridge. Italian police said two witnesses reported they saw someone being thrown from the Garibaldi bridge into the Tiber River. The authorities also reportedly obtained CCTV footage near the bank of the river, showing the incident.

A homeless woman sharing a tent with Massimo Galioto said she saw Massimo Galioto and Beau Solomon fighting each-other, and then saw Beau Solomon fall into the river. The woman alleged Beau Solomon was drunk and the company included two people from North Africa.

On Monday, Italian police found Beau Solomon’s body near Guglielmo Marconi bridge about three miles (five kilometres) downstream from Trastevere, where the student was last seen at about 1AM in G-Bar in Piazza Trilussa on Friday night after his first day in Italy. Solomon was beginning a summer school at John Cabot University. His parents arrived on Monday using emergency passports.

The body had no mobile device or wallet, suggesting to local authorities it was a robbery. The body also had a head wound and bloody shirt, the victim’s 23-year-old brother Cole Solomon told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Monday.

Last week on Friday morning, Beau Solomon’s parents received bank alerts. According to the student’s brother Jake Solomon, the bank told his parents Beau’s bank card was charged “thousands of dollars”. Authorities later confirmed the amount as about 1,500 euro (about US$1700). The credit card of the victim was charged in Milan over 300 miles away from Rome on Friday.

Beau Solomon was aged 19. He came to Italy to attend summer school on Thursday. Beau Solomon did not attend university student orientation next morning, and the institution reported him missing to the local authorities at 9PM.

When using wrought iron art, your style is versatile, yet classic. Wrought iron will blend with every style of decorating, from classic to contemporary. There are a wide range of choices that will still reflect your personality, while becoming one of the staple pieces that may change locations in the home, but won’t be replaced.

Wrought iron d cor is one of the most versatile pieces of art available. Appealing to both genders, this classic style of art is available as wall art, accent pieces and functional accents of furniture. When shopping for a new piece of art, consider wrought iron art to give that statement to your room that will tie multiple elements together.

Wrought iron art is made from a variety of iron. This metal is refined, and once it is in a commercially-sound state, it is formed into a solid bar. These bars are then heated, and pounded into a shape. Wrought iron is not suitable for weaponry, such as swords, but through the years it has been a popular metal for a wide range of uses. One of these uses has become the many choices in art pieces.

With the growing popularity of wrought iron d cor, it is easier than ever to find that piece (or several) to anchor the look of your home or office. Wrought iron art is traditionally not committed to a particular color scheme, as a painting or other piece of art may be. This makes it an easy choice when looking for a piece that is guaranteed to work on the wall or on a shelf.

These unique pieces will become a regular conversation piece as guests notice the beautiful handiwork in your home.

When trying to bring a piece of the outdoors in, wrought iron art works as a functional and beautiful piece. From sturdy brackets to coat bars, wrought iron will be a long lasting choice that will provide a beautiful choice for your needs.

Some choose to decorate with a continuous flow from the outside in with wrought iron d cor extending from the outside patio indoors. Outdoor pieces may consist of a garden trellis, or outdoor clocks or other furniture. Wrought iron will weather well with minimal care, and adds that touch of class to the outdoor area. When bringing the look indoors, some choose to let it be a dominate look while others leave discreet accents.

Wrought iron is perfect for accenting a fireplace area. This durable and beautiful art looks great as a wood rack to hold wood, or used as a magazine or recycling rack. This makes it easy to tie that cabin look together for cozy winter evenings.

Wrought iron d cor may be most popular lately as wall art. With every style imaginable, modern art is now commonly found in office settings made from wrought iron. This has extended into homes. Many people choose wrought iron art to add an arch over doorways, or to create a statement.

When decorating with wrought iron, you can easily change the location of the art to give a room a new look without worry about matching colors. This makes wrought iron a good investment piece for decorating your home.

Wrought iron d cor is not only beautiful, it is an affordable way to create a new look for your home. With the lasting beauty and versatility, there is a piece that is sure to become a family heirloom. Whether buying for yourself or as a gift, wrought iron is one of the best choices you can make for a lasting piece of art.

Toronto serial killer Bruce McArthur pleads guilty to eight murders

Friday, February 1, 2019

Bruce McArthur, from Toronto, Canada, on Tuesday admitted his guilt in eight murders. McArthur pleaded guilty to each crime at the Superior Court.

Beginning in 2010 and continuing for seven years, McArthur murdered gay men; all but one victim was found dismembered in large planters at a house he had access to. The eighth was discovered in a nearby ravine. McArthur’s first victim of the eight was 40-year-old Skandaraj Navaratnam, a former boyfriend and employee of McArthur. The 67-year-old killer had kept a bracelet of Navaratnam’s.

Other items kept from victims include a notebook from one victim and further jewellery from another. A search of McArthur’s van found an alleged murder weapon, which was not publicly identified; inside McArthur’s home was a bag with syringes, a glove, duct tape, zip ties, and a bungee cord. Six of the murders were, according to agreed facts heard in court, “sexual in nature” and five of those involved ligatures.

Several of the deceased had links to an area of the city known as the Gay Village. Many were vulnerable, but the final victim, LGBT activist Andrew Kinsman, 49, was quickly reported missing. It is now known McArthur was twice interviewed by police during the killings before he was linked to them.

McArthur travelled selling socks and other undergarments. He also ran a small landscaping business.

Sentencing is scheduled for February 4. McArthur faces a mandatory life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years for first-degree murder; the prosecution can seek to run these consecutively.

Toronto Police, which indicated on Monday a “significant development” was likely at Tuesday’s hearing, face allegations they failed to react quickly enough to the series of disappearances. Some members of the local LGBT community have been critical; mayor John Tory on Tuesday suggested a broader probe into the surrounding circumstances may be required. National LGBT news source Daily Xtra?’s editorial director, Rachel Giese, said she felt Tuesday’s pleas might provide “some solace for the families and friends of the victims, and for the community more broadly,” but would not answer questions being asked of authorities.

Copyright on musical recordings extended by twenty years in EU

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

The Council of the European Union voted yesterday to extend the term of copyright on sound recordings by twenty years, from 50 years to 70, preventing a number of early recordings of 1960s rock musicians including The Beatles from entering the public domain. The 1962 hit “Love Me Do” would have entered the public domain in 2012 if this legislation had not been introduced. EU member states have to enact the copyright extension within two years.

The news was welcomed by representatives of the recording industry and by some recording artists. Cliff Richard has campaigned for term extension. Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones said the decision was “obviously advantageous” to performers, and Bjorn Ulvaeus from Abba welcomed the continued control over the group’s recordings: “Now I won’t have to see Abba being used in a TV commercial”. Geoff Taylor from the British Phonographic Industry said “[a]n exceptional period of British musical genius was about to lose its protection. As a matter of principle, it is right that our musicians should benefit from their creativity during their lifetimes, and that they should not be disadvantaged compared to musicians in other countries.”

Extension of the copyright term also has critics. Jim Killock, from the British digital rights advocacy group the Open Rights Group (ORG), said the move “puts money into the pockets of big labels” but will be “unlikely to benefit smaller artists and it will mean that a lot of sound recordings that are out of print will stay out of print”. Singer Sandie Shaw, of the Featured Artists’ Coalition, said the move would be “extremely good news for record companies and collection agencies, but bad news for artists” and would lead to artists having “20 more years in servitude to contracts that are no longer appropriate to a digital age”.

The extension to 70 years is less than that EU Commissioner Charlie McCreevy proposed in 2008. At that time, Wikinews interviewed Eddan Katz of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Becky Hogge, then Executive Director of ORG, in Brussels. The two organisations were gathering like-minded groups to oppose harmonisation with the US’s 95-year term. Characterising the sought extension as “Cliff Richard’s pension”, Hogge asserted, “[w]hat you’ve got at the end of the day with copyright term extension is basically […] rent seeking by special interest groups lobbying governments to change the law in order that they may economically gain directly.”

Two reviews of intellectual property rights in Britain have concluded it would not be economically beneficial to extend copyright terms on sound recordings. The Gowers Review of Intellectual Property in 2006 concluded extension of the copyright term would “negatively impact upon consumers and industry”. The Hargreaves Review of Intellectual Property and Growth in 2011 concluded it would be “economically detrimental”. A study conducted by Bournemouth University’s Center for Intellectual Property Policy and Management concluded 72% of the economic benefits of the term extension would go to record labels, with 28% going to artists, only 4% of which are going to less successful artists.

What Is The Process Of Water Purification?

byadmin

There are a number of different ways to create pure water from water that comes from natural sources or indeed, water that emanates from human drainage systems. The most common water purification in Lincoln, NE is when water is extracted from a constant source and mechanically enhanced by removing all the physical impurities. Once the physical impurities have been removed from the source water and any harmful bacteria or organisms in the water have been destroyed the water is safe for human consumption.

The process of water purification begins when water is taken from the source, this can be a river, lake or a sewer system. The water is first sent to huge holding tanks where it is allowed to sit motionless for long enough for much of the suspended material to be separated as it sinks to the bottom of the tank.

Once the initial separation process has been completed the water moves on to the actual purification process. It moves from the holding tank to another tank where large physical objects are removed, not sediment. At this stage the pH of the water is adjusted to within specific limits and sodium carbonate is put into the water, this begins a reaction that results in calcium carbonate. From here the water moves to areas where the water is disinfected. As it moves from the second holding tank and heads to the area where water purification in Lincoln, NE takes place, harmful microbes are destroyed. In the past the destruction of the microbes was done with chlorine, today much of the purification process is done using hydrogen peroxide, UV light and ozone.

At this stage the water is still not purified, it must be subjected to a process called flocculation. Based on the original source of the water and the location of the purification plant tiny particles are added to the water. These tiny particles are attracted to one another and many of the common impurities found in water. These particles eventually form small balls of impure material; this water then flows to another tank where the little balls settle on the bottom.

The final stage of the purification process is active filtering. Many different filtering methods exist but the most common is to force the water through a bed of sand. Once filtration is complete the water is fit for human consumption and is piped to the consumer through the municipal water distribution system.

Dissolved mineral salts, excessive chorine and even bacteria can still remain in the municipal water when it arrives in your home and further water purification in Lincoln, NE will improve the taste and odor. You are invited to contact Futuramic’s Clean Water Center to learn more about their reverse osmosis and UV sterilization systems.

Wikinews interviews Professor Gigi Foster about pandemic control in Australia

Wednesday, August 11, 2021

On July 22, Wikinews interviewed Professor Gigi Foster of School of Economics at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia about measures that the government took to stop the spread of COVID-19, a virus that caused what the World Health Organization declared a pandemic last year.

Professor Foster is on faculty with the School of Economics at the University of New South Wales. She wrote an Op-Ed in the Sydney Morning Herald, arguing for a case against the so-called “lockdowns” – measures which the state governments in Australia were implementing to stop the spread of COVID-19. These measures included things like limiting the size of gatherings, directing certain business types such as gyms to close or operate at reduced capacity, limiting where people may travel and restricting residents to only leaving their home if they have a reasonable excuse to do so.

In New South Wales, these restrictions were implemented as Public Health Orders, signed by Brad Hazzard, the Minister for Health and Medical Research. Mr Brad Hazzard has authority make these Orders under the Public Health Act 2010, section 7.

Wikinews reached out to Professor Gigi Foster, asking for comment.

The interview was conducted amid an outbreak of COVID-19 in New South Wales, that has resulted in an increase of restrictions from June 26. At the day of interview, residents were legally allowed to go outdoors only for essential shopping, medical care, and exercise, in groups of no more than two people unless of a common household. On July 28, authorities extended these restrictions until the end of August.

The current outbreak of the COVID-19 Delta strain started from ‘patient zero’, reportedly a driver, which includes transporting international flight crew, as NSW Health wrote on June 16. A week later, on June 24, the driver commented that he thought that he caught the virus from a local cafe, where another patron was visibly unwell.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has said that “our mission is to allow our citizens to live as safely and freely as possible”, having announced that only authorized workers — people whose occupation is essential — could leave home in selected higher risk regions in south-west of Sydney until July 30.

Work of the construction industry has been stopped for several days, and resumed this week with requirement that the construction workers get tested for COVID-19 regularly.

The Two Most Trusted And Time Tested Swing Trading Indicators

By Creztor Tessel

The trend is your friend; this is a very common phrase that is used frequently in the trading world. However, some things are easier said than done. Every trader knows the trend is his friend, but which swing trading indicators should one use to take advantage of the trend? When used properly, trading indicators can make entry and exit of trades easy, but the difficult is in knowing which indicator you should use. As technology has advanced over the years, there has been a huge increase in the number and kind of indicators traders have available. To get a head start on your path to trading successfully, one needs to know which indicators are worth your time and which ones should be ignored. Some of the most popular trading indicators are MACD, Stochastics, Moving Averages and trend lines.

Moving averages are very popular in the trading world. One of the reasons for this is that they are possibly the oldest and first kind of indicators used by traders. Thanks to this they have gained a reputation of being the most widely used and trusted kind of indicator. Many professional stock traders around the world use moving averages to determine trend in the markets. There are several kinds of moving averages; simple, exponential, weighted and many more. Despite the kind of moving average, these indicators are frequently used to spot the trend and determine areas of support and resistance. A trader armed with this kind of information can fine tune their entry and exit increasing their returns.

Building upon the power of moving averages, the MACD is another very commonly used and highly valued trading indicator. The MACD is based on two moving averages and has multiple uses. This single indicator can be used to determine the trend of a market, spot areas of divergence and also be used to generate entry and exit signals for trades. There probably isn’t any other indicator that is as versatile and unique as the MACD. The MACD is a momentum indicator and as such is also used to identify areas where markets may be approaching their limit and readying for a pull back. It is no wonder that the MACD is so widely used by professional and corporate traders around the world.

These are just two of the many swing trading indicators that traders have at their dispose. If you are just starting out then it would be advised that you stick to indicators that are well known, trusted and widely used by the trading community and successful traders. Moving averages and the MACD are just two indicators that fall into this category of being proven and reliable. When used properly, moving averages offer any trader the ability to identify the trend and areas of support and resistance at a glance. MACD goes one step further and allows insight into momentum of the market which gives you the advantage of knowing when the market may be running out of steam. These two trading indicators have stood the test of time and should be a trading tool for any new trader.

United States: Four injured in Los Angeles school shooting

Sunday, February 4, 2018

Thursday morning, at Salvador Castro Middle School in the Westlake District, Los Angeles (L.A.), California, US, four students were injured when a gun went off in a girl’s backpack, according to police. L.A. police took a suspect into custody, a twelve-year-old female student, and recovered the gun at the scene.

The four injured students were transported to a local hospital. A fifteen-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was recovering according to a Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center spokesperson on Wednesday. A fifteen-year-old girl was shot in the wrist, and two other students were grazed. The girl and two other students were hospitalized for their injuries.

A 30-year-old staff member was also injured, but reports were unclear whether she was injured by gunfire.

Police officials charged the twelve-year-old girl with negligent discharge of a firearm and she was taken to a juvenile detention center. Police said they did not believe the shooting was intentional, but suspected the girl had the gun in her backpack and it fired off when the bag dropped on the ground.

The Westlake middle school is located near downtown L.A. and is located on the campus of Belmont High School and had an enrollment last year of 355 students.
