Scotland denies bail to terminally ill man convicted of Lockerbie bombing

Saturday, November 15, 2008

Scotland has refused bail to the Libyan man convicted of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 despite his terminal cancer, as he can receive treatment in prison. Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al-Megrahi was jailed in 2001 for the 1988 bombing of the transatlantic airliner, killing 270 people, but is seeking to have his conviction overturned.

Minutes after Edinburgh’s Appeals Court rejected bail on compassionate grounds Jim Swire, spokesman for the victim’s families who lost his daughter in the disaster, complained about the ruling. “It has never been a goal of our group to seek revenge,” said a lawyer outside the court reading from his statement. “The refusal of a return to his family for a dying man whose verdict is not even yet secure looks uncomfortably like either an aspect of revenge — or perhaps timidity.”

Al-Megrahi, a former intelligence officer, is 54 and serving a minimum of 27 years for the bombing. He has advanced prostate cancer which is spreading through his body. His request for bail was rejected by Lord Hamilton, Scotland’s head judge, who said that as doctors say he could live a few more years he should not be released unless and until after his appeal succeeds or his condition worsens.

Some other doctors give his time as just months, as the cancer has reached his bones. Hamilton however said that palliative hormone treatment could prolong his life. Hamilton also said Al-Megrahi was not suffering “material pain or disability”.

The Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission ruled last year that the conviction may be a miscarriage of justice. It said there was significant doubts to be raised over several key pieces of evidence in the original trial.

Glasgow cannabis enthusiasts celebrate ‘green’ on city green

Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Coinciding with Easter Sunday, Glasgow Cannabis Social Club’s annual 420 event was held on Glasgow Green, under sunny blue skies, and overlooking the river Clyde. Despite the city’s council attempting to revoke permission for the gathering at the last minute, police were happy for it to go-ahead with approximately a dozen officers attending in high-visibility vests.

The Daily Record reported five arrests were made for minor offences, likely smoking and possession of small quantities of cannabis. Taking a less-sensational — and more accurate — line of reporting, the Monday edition of Glasgow’s Evening News stated five were referred to the Procurator Fiscal who is responsible for deciding if charges should be brought.

Official figures provided by the police were that 150 attended. With people coming and going, Wikinews reporters estimated upwards of 200 attended, compared to nearly 700 who had signed up for the event on Facebook. Hemp goods were advertised and on sale at the event, and some attendees were seen drinking cannabis-themed energy drinks.

“I was searched and charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act (which is a lot of bollocks)” one attendee noted online, adding “not fair to happen on a brilliant day like it was, other than that I had a great day!” A second said they were openly smoking and ignored by police, who “were only really focusing on people who looked particularly young”.

Cannabis seeds were openly and legally sold at the event and a hydroponics supplier brought a motortrike towing an advertising trailer. Actually growing cannabis is, however, illegal in the UK.

With the event openly advocating the legalisation of cannabis, speakers put their arguments for this to a receptive crowd. Retired police officer James Duffy, of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, spoke of the failed United States alcohol prohibition policy; stressing such policies needlessly bring people into contact with criminal elements. Highlighting other countries where legalisation has been implemented, he pointed out such led to lower crime, and lower drug use overall.

One speaker, who produced a bottle of cannabis oil he had received through the post, asserted this cured his prostate cancer. Others highlighted the current use of Sativex by the National Health Service, with a cost in-excess of £150 for a single bottle of GW Pharmaceuticals patented spray — as-compared to the oil shown to the crowd, with a manufacturing cost of approximately £10.

Similar ‘420’ pro-cannabis events were held globally.

Iran to conduct missile defense exercise

Saturday, September 26, 2009

The Iranian government has announced that the nation will be participating in a missile defense test which could take place as early as tomorrow.

According to the IRNA, Iran’s official news agency, the test is an annual exercise aimed to “maintain and develop” defense capabilities of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

The exercise is named ‘Great Prophet 4’ and will involve shooting a variety of live missiles at targets. Reports say the drill will be conducted in several unknown locations and will last for several days. The exercise also falls on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

The announcement comes just hours after the Iranian government stated that the nation was building a second nuclear power facility. The announcement was made in a September 21 letter from the Iranian government to the United Nations Security Council that a second nuclear plant was being constructed in the city of Qom.

Germany gives 16.7 million euro loan to Albania to improve its water supply

Friday, May 6, 2005

Germany will lend Albania 16.7 million (USD21.5 million) as part of a loan in order to help the country improve its water supply networks in two southeastern towns, Pogradec and Korca. The deal was signed last Tuesday between the Albanian Finance Ministry and Germany’s government-owned KfW Bank.

Germany has been one of the most significant donors to Albania since the fall of Communism. In total, it has contributed more than €326 million to the country’s development, while investing €135 million in its water supply and urban canals. 80% of this has been given through grants.

When Your Ex Boyfriend Ignores You A Proven Way To Get His Attention Again!

Having your ex boyfriend ignore you can be a frustrating situation. However this is what usually happens after a breakup. No matter what means you take to communicate with him, he will ignore. This did not happen when he first met you and was trying to get your attention. But, he can do it now because he has your attention. The more attention you give him by trying to get your ex boyfriend back, the more he will ignore you.

Many will tell you the problem is the way men and women react to different situations. That is not necessarily true. Take a look at when the two of you first met. Who did the chasing then? I bet it was your ex boyfriend. Now stop and think about the reason he chased you. It was probably because he showed interest in you and you ignored him.

This is a law of human nature. If you want something, it is natural to go after it. The harder something is to get, the more effort you put into getting it. Soon you can think of nothing else. That is what happened to your ex boyfriend when you were ignoring him and it is what is happening to you now that he is ignoring you.

So how do you make him stop ignoring you and show interest in you again? You start ignoring your ex boyfriend. The sooner you show him you can live without him, the sooner you will spark his interest. The reason for the breakup might have been because you became too available and he became bored or you were too demanding of his time and he felt smothered.

Science has not as of this writing found a cure for the common cold, but there is a simple cure for the two problems mentioned above. The cure is to make yourself scarce. Stop running after your ex boyfriend, accept the breakup and move on with your life. You might be afraid to just walk away from him because you feel he will find someone else.

The truth is, if you keep chasing him you will chase him into the arms of another woman. Men want something that they can’t have. That’s why he chased you in the beginning. As long as you were ignoring him and not showing interest in him, he was challenged. Once you gave in and he felt sure of you, the challenge was gone.

To get your ex boyfriend’s attention again, you have to start ignoring him again. Love is a crazy game. If you give it too freely, it is not appreciated, but if you stay a little out of a man’s reach he will always be chasing you. That will provide the challenge you need to get your ex boyfriend back. It is also the way to keep him once you get him back. Never let him feel too comfortable with your love and he will never leave you.

Ricky Hatton regains IBF light welterweight title

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton regained the IBF light welterweight title belt he relinquished less than 12 months ago when he defeated Juan Urango in Las Vegas, Nevada tonight.

“The Hitman” won by unanimous decision, as the fight went to 12 rounds. Despite early match odds suggesting Hatton would dominate the fight, this was not the case. Each round was close, but most pundits and judges alike agreed that Urango only won 1 of the 12 rounds, with Hatton taking the other 11.

Despite the unfamiliar confines of Las Vegas, Hatton looked touched by the ringing of football fan-like chants, familiar in British boxing, that rang around the arena, as more than half of it was filled by traveling support from across the atlantic.

Many in the UK will hope Hatton has ended the “curse” that has seen names such as Frank Bruno, Naseem Hamed, Barry McGuigan and others fall short while headlining fights on “The Strip”.

From here, it is widely believed “The Hitman” will move on to fight Jose Luis Castillo in June, again likely in Vegas.

Toronto’s Anime North 2019 brings thousands of fans together

Friday, May 31, 2019

Many thousands of anime and manga fans descended on the Toronto Congress Centre for Anime North, a fan-run convention launched in 1997. Spread between four venues over three days, May 24 to 26, the event featured J-pop maid idols, voice actors, writers, and more. Wikinews attended.

Despite the ample indoor spaces, the parking lot of the Centre is also a hub of activity, with cosplayers posing for photos. Attendees were sent running for cover on Saturday, as heavy rains and a severe thunderstorm warning put a damper on festivities.

The event is organized by a massive team of volunteers, and known for its specialized programming for fans, by fans. On the night of May 25, for example, attendees could catch “Pokemon Biology”, “Kimono Obi Tying”, and “Underappreciated Sports Anime/Manga.”

US voice actor Alexis Tipton marveled at the growth of the anime industry in the last decade. “Back when I was going as a fan, there wasn’t as much anime, so it was easier to know about everything,” Tipton observed during a question and answer session. “I’m so overwhelmed by how much there is.”

Tipton held a panel on her career, dubbing anime for US distribution company Funimation Entertainment. While many anime voice actors weren’t fans going into the industry, Tipton recalled going to anime conventions with her friends during middle school and high school. Once she was an invited guest, Tipton recalls realizing “oh, I’m not here to just have fun, I’m here to work; I have a set schedule and I can’t just, like, you know, go do what I want.”

Early in her career, Tipton was cast as a voice for My Bride is a Mermaid, a role that required singing. Then just 19 years old, she looked at the role as a “chance to face my demons,” having questioned her abilities for years. “I was in an extremely competitive [singing musical theatre] program in high school. I had started working at Funimation when I was 19, so I was just barely in college. And so those scars were still like, really fresh. I had a lot of competition and people would find what your perceived weakness was, or what your actual weakness was in the program, and they would take advantage of it. And so I had people trying to make me feel like I couldn’t sing my way out of a paper bag, and then I would get so nervous when I would sing that I couldn’t support my notes, and so it would just prove them right.”

Tipton was devastated when she got a sinus infection, the week of the audition. “This director doesn’t know me, I haven’t worked with him, he’s going to think that this is what I sound like,” she recalls thinking. “I don’t know if I had a shot to begin with, but now I really don’t have a shot.” She was thrilled when she was cast.

Another voice actor, Lauren Landa, would list Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus as dream roles, when asked at conventions. She was given a chance to audition for the characters years later, when Vizmedia dubbed the first two seasons of Sailor Moon. When she was cast, “I swear to you, I was speechless,” she told an audience at her Q&A session.

Cosplay model and professional singer Jillea attended the Saturday of the convention dressed as Pokemon species Charizard. Wikinews spoke with her by email, after the event:

((WN)) What got you into cosplay modelling?

Jillea: My love for cosplay started with the community, what started as a fun hobby I would do periodically quickly became a huge part of my life, and the reason for that being how amazing the cosplay community embraced me and my work. I’ve always been a creative person, so getting to make my costumes and have people say ‘oh my gosh, I love that character!!’ got me hooked right away. They’re just my people, what can I say, they really make me feel welcomed and I love them for it.

((WN)) How did you choose Charizard?

J: I’m a 90’s baby so you could say I’m a bit of a Pokémon OG! I had a Game Boy as a kid and my very first purchase was Pokémon Red, solely based on how cool Charizard looked on the cover. Charizard has always been my favourite Pokémon and I can’t resist a challenging cosplay… and the nostalgia!

((WN)) What was your favourite part of Anime North?

J: This was my very first time attending Anime North and I was blown away! The booths were incredible and unique, every time I turned around I was seeing something different I’ve never seen at a convention before. Everything was easy to access and I even made use of the Cosplay Recharge station that literally saved the day with their hot glue! Extremely friendly environment it will not be my last time back for sure.

When To Consider Spinal Pinched Nerve Surgery

By Patrick Foote

In more than 90 percent of cases, spinal pinched nerve surgery never becomes an option. Whether the associated nerve compression occurs within the cervical (neck) or lumbar (lower back) region, the pain, tingling, numbness, and/or muscle weakness caused by the compressed nerve normally can be managed conservatively (non-surgically). This can mean a course of prescription anti-inflammatory medication, or an exercise regimen supervised by a licensed physical therapist. It may also mean a series of corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation in the spine and block pain signals, or daily applications of heat or ice.

There are many forms of conservative treatments available, and some are more effective than others. The bottom line is, a pinched nerve (more accurately known as nerve compression) typically is not going to land a patient on an operating table unless an emergency situation occurs such as cauda equina syndrome. This is, of course, a broad statement, and not everyone is fortunate enough to achieve relief using non-surgical methods.

Anatomy of a Pinched Nerve in the Spine

Any consideration of whether to undergo spinal pinched nerve surgery requires an understanding of the potential causes of a pinched nerve in the spine. There are 31 pairs of spinal nerve roots branching off the spinal cord, running the length of the spinal column. These nerve roots exit the spinal column at each vertebral level through openings known as intervertebral foramina. These openings are formed by the interlocking vertebra and allow room for the nerve roots to pass. This room can become constricted in the presence of degenerative spine conditions such as bulging discs, bone spurs, herniated discs, and spondylolisthesis (vertebral slippage). Traumatic injury that compresses the vertebrae might also affect the amount of space available for nerve roots.

If a spinal nerve root becomes compressed, the area of the body innervated by that nerve will be affected. Nerve compression can cause localized pain, but the truly problematic symptoms are known as radiculopathy – traveling pain, the loss of sensation, and muscular weakness in the extremities. The location of the pinched nerve determines the area of the body affected. A pinched nerve in the cervical (neck) region typically produces symptoms in the shoulders, neck, upper back, arms, and fingers. Nerve compression in the lumbar (lower back) region affects the lower back, the buttocks, the legs, feet, and toes.

Pinched Nerve Surgery – a Subjective Decision

The problem with deciding whether to undergo an elective surgical procedure to decompress a pinched nerve is that there often is no definitive moment at which the conservative options prove ineffective. Because there are so many non-surgical methods available, and because no two cases are alike, a period of trial-and-error may be necessary to formulate the correct combination of treatments. Meanwhile, the patient’s level of discomfort may fluctuate, and only he or she can decide whether the pain and other symptoms are bearable. This makes the decision whether to resort to elective pinched nerve surgery extremely subjective, but there are a number of factors that can help sway a patient’s thinking:

— Have all available conservative methods been attempted?

— Have the chronic symptoms dramatically affected a patient’s happiness and well-being?

— Is the patient’s overall health conducive to successful surgery and recovery?

— Has the patient received a second (or even a third) opinion about his or her long-range prognosis?

Understanding the Risks of Pinched Nerve Surgery

Finally, if a patient has decided that he or she simply can’t achieve meaningful relief from back or neck pain using conservative methods, it’s time to consider the potential risks and side effects of decompression surgery. Spine surgery takes two basic forms: open back or neck surgery, or minimally invasive procedures. Both types have their risks, although the minimally invasive option typically has fewer risks and a shorter period of recuperation. No patient should consent to any form of spine surgery before thoroughly discussing the options, risks, and potential side effects with a doctor.
