Chemical plant fire decimates Danvers, Massachusetts neighboorhood

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

According to outgoing Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, an explosion that was “equivalent to a 2,000 lb. bomb” and registered 0.5 on the Richter scale decimated an area of Danvers and is also a “Thanksgiving miracle.”

The explosion occurred around 2:45 am EST, this morning in the Danversport area of Danvers, Massachusetts at the plant for solvent and ink manufacturer, CAI Inc. The explosion, which was caught on security camera and was heard up to over 25-50 miles away in southern Maine and New Hampshire.

The explosion damaged over 90 homes, blowing out windows and knocking some houses off their foundations. Officials believe that some of the more extensively damaged houses will have to be leveled and rebuilt. Some of the buildings damaged included a bakery, boats at a close by marina and the New England Home for the Deaf, an assisted-living facility for people who are deaf or deafblind and elderly residents requiring constant care. “These people are extremely fragile,” said state Rep. Ted Speliotis, D-Danvers, whose district includes the affected area. “Many of them have Alzheimer’s and other illnesses. It’s clear they can’t stay here long, but it’s clear they won’t be able to return for quite a while.”

Danvers Fire Chief James P. Tutko toured the area by helicopter and said many residents would be kept from their homes for the foreseeable future. “It looks like a war zone, that’s the only thing I can say,” Tutko said. When asked about the loss of no life at all, he responded “Somebody out there likes us.” Finally, he said that finding out the cause of the explosion would take days.

Outgoing governor Mitt Romney toured the area and said the explosion was a “Thanksgiving miracle” as the explosion was “equivalent to a 2,000 lb bomb going off in a residential neighborhood,” and that no one was killed and only about 10 people suffered only minor injuries in area that included over 300 residents. Residents of the area have been evacuated to the Danvers High School where temporary shelter has been set up by the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay. Donations are being taken for residents affected by the explosion. Residents are also being told to start filing insurance claims right away and to keep track of their expenses for items bought.

There were minor environmental concerns due to water runoff of chemicals. According the Environmental Protection Agency‘s on-scene coordinator Mike Nalipinski, preliminary tests showed low levels of toluene, a solvent, but said it was nothing of significance. Water runoff from the water used by firefighters left a purple sheen on the river and tests were being conducted. However, the water is not a local drinking water supply and the chemical evaporates quickly. Chief Tutko said there was no risk of toxic fumes getting into the air.

An Eastern Propane facility was also located near the area, however, it was not the source of the explosion. A spokesman for the company said that although the property suffered some minor damage, their tanks are secure.

According to WHDH television, a person who answered the telephone at CAI’s Georgetown, Massachusetts headquarters refused comment, and a telephone message left at the company president’s home was not immediately returned.

Tips For Buying A Water Heater}

Tips For Buying A Water Heater

by

Gray RollinsA water heater is a device that is installed in your home to store and heat water. These generally run on either electricity or gas, depending on what type of fuel source is prevalent in your area. Both versions run similarly and come in sizes from twenty to over one hundred gallons. Before purchasing a new water heater, there are a few things that should be considered.

The type of fuel to be used is a determining factor in which unit to choose. If you already have gas hook ups, a gas generated water heater will be your best bet. These generally save on energy costs. However, electric units can be run anywhere and if this is your primary fuel source, an electric water heater should be purchased. Costs to convert the fuel source from electric to gas may be prohibitive so it is best to use whichever fuel source is already installed.

Before determining the capacity of the water heater, look at your family’s needs. Also, think about the future and whether your family will increase. Purchasing a water heater is an investment and future growth should be looked at to get one that will suit you for many years. Determine how often hot water is used in your home to decide whether you have high or regular demand for hot water. For a family of two, choose a water heater that has at least a thirty gallon capacity or up to a fifty gallon capacity if hot water is used often. Families of up to four should consider a fifty to eighty gallon tank, and families with five or more should start at fifty gallons and may go to one hundred twenty if there is a high demand.

The number of gallons the water heater can heat per hour is called the recovery rate. This is also a consideration in buying a water heater. If you have several people in your home who use hot water at the same time, a higher recovery will be beneficial. However, if you have a more typical hot water use pattern, a lower recover rate can be chosen. Water heaters with lower capacities and lower recovery rates will be less expensive.

Water heaters come in a variety of dimensions. Ensure you have the proper space available to physically install it in the designated area. You will not usually have to sacrifice capacity to get a water heater with smaller dimensions. Every water heater is tagged with an energy efficiency rating. Choose the most efficient rating you can afford as this will help save on energy costs.

Water heaters are not difficult to purchase but there are a few things that need to be considered. Determine the capacity, size, fuel source, and energy efficiency needed for your home. Compare prices to determine the model that will best suit you and your family for years to come.

Controversial Queensland Premier of 19 years dies at 94

Saturday, April 23, 2005Queensland Australia’s Sir Joh Bjelke Petersen, a controversial figure who served as the State’s Premier for 19 years and reigned over the government that later became the subject of the Fitzgerald Inquiry, has died in hospital at Kingaroy, aged 94.

“By any measurement, Sir Joh was an exceptional state builder who will be remembered for consistently placing Queensland first,” said the Australian Governor General, Major General Jeffery, in a statement.

Australian Prime Minister, John Howard: “He was certainly a strong political figure and I extend my condolences to his wife and his family.”

But not all voices were sympathetic, prominent Queensland Aboriginal activist Sam Watson for example: “Aboriginal people will always remember him as a racist, a thug and a dictator.”

Having suffered severe ill-health for some weeks, and declining health for years, Sir Joh passed away at around 6pm AEST. He was surrounded by his family, who had been summoned yesterday by Lady Flo, his wife and one-time Senator, for final goodbyes.

Phrases such as “Don’t you worry about that” and “Goodness gracious me” were like trademarks to the maverick leader.

Known simply as ‘Joh’ to many, he would famously describe press conferences as ‘feeding the chooks’. Today Kingaroy locals taunted waiting press with cries from “You’re chooks, you’re chooks, ha ha” to “Go home, ya vultures”, and some obscenities, reported the Courier-Mail of Brisbane.

His fall from power at the end of the 80s was surrounded in controversy, with the state embroiled in corruption findings going to the level of his deputies, and Bjelke Petersen’s claims of ignorance coming under challenge with charges of perjury. The case was never heard due to a controversial hung jury: the foreman of the jury, Luke Shaw, had been an office-bearer of the Young Nationals — an arm of Bjelke Petersen’s National Party — as well as a member of a group calling themselves ‘Friends of Joh’.

Having had his start in life as a peanut farmer in remote Kingaroy, the former Premier was fit up until the very end, but palsy was paralyzing his muscles and organs, to which he eventually succumbed.

“Throughout his life Sir Joh combined enormous energy, vision and an immense capacity for hard work, most especially during his 19-year term as Premier of Queensland,” the Governor General said.

“What looked to us to be huge risks at the time turned out to be nation building,” said Bob Katter, a former minister of Joh’s Government, who credited Sir Joh with starting the Queensland coal, aluminum and tourism industries.

He is also remembered for dismantling many of the State’s unions, and for a somewhat totalitarian and heavy handed style of keeping control.

Under Joh, street protests were banned and Special Branch monitored extensively those the authoritarian leader saw as subversives, measures prompting Queenslander, Australian Civil Liberties Council, Terry O’Gorman, to comment Sir Joh was “the most appalling premier Queensland has ever had in terms of civil liberties and human rights”.

Joh was also influential in the famous case of the Dismissal by the Governor General of then-Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, in 1975.

In his last years as Premier, he had taken his cause to the nation’s capital, with the “Joh for PM” campaign. But this distraction has been credited with the downfall of his government, with corruption investigations at last being conducted by his stand-in, Bill Gunn.

The body of Sir Joh, who was of Lutheran faith, is to be buried at Bethany, the family property near Kingaroy.

Unsolicited quotes from ordinary Australians, many ex-Queenslanders seeking refuge in southern states, on hearing the news:

“Outrageous bastard! Oh God! That was polite!” — “Karen”

“Guilty as Hell. And that’s where he is now.” — “Michael”

“Yay! Good riddence to bad rubbish” — “Liza”

“The dictator is gone our time 2 sing” — “John. H.”

“Yeah he took a while — about 90 f*cking years overdue!” — “Hose Man”

“The pope an joh at least somethin going right” — “Helen”

“Corrupt f*cking sh*teating Bible-bashing f*ckw*t is dead. And thank f*ck. I haven’t been so happy since September 11!” — “Greg”

“I don’t drink but I’ll be having a red whilst dancing on his grave.” — “Cellest”

“Ding dong the d*ck is dead!” — anon.

“Yeahhh!!! Fucking finally” — “Leo”

“It’s a great day today the Rednecks are silent a great victory has been won” — “Zenner”

Distributed malware attacks Dyn DNS, takes down websites in US

Monday, October 24, 2016

On Friday, a network of diverse Internet-connected devices targeted the Dyn domain registration service provider. It took down Dyn clients, including several popular websites such as Twitter, Netflix, Spotify, Reddit, New York Times, and Wired.

The attack involved targeting Dyn’s domain name system servers with a large volume of requests, rendering it incapable of serving replies to legitimate requests — a DDoS (distributed denial of service) attack. Users’ browsers and other clients sent requests to Dyn to resolve the respective web sites’ domain names to an IP, but did not get a reply within the time required.

The first attack started at about 7am local time (UTC-4) and was resolved in two hours. A second attack started at mid-day, and a third attack started at about 4pm local time. Tens of millions of malicious request sources were observed, interfering with legitimate Dyn traffic.

The reports noted the malicious devices included internet-connected devices — not only servers and desktops, but also webcams, digital video recorders, routers — referred to as the Internet of Things.

On Friday evening Dyn said a security company Flashpoint and a cloud services provider Akamai identified symptoms of malware Mirai participating in the attacks. The malware infects the devices by brute forcing their passwords. This strategy may work as a consequence of users’ negligence towards password security of stationary devices, which the users do not directly interact with in their everyday life while leaving them exposed to the Internet.

Matthew Prince, the CEO of an Internet infrastructure company Cloudflare said it’s a known issue, “There’s nothing really new about [this type of DDoS attack]. We’ve seen them for at least the last three years, they tend to be difficult to stop”.

Public release of Mirai source code was announced at Hackforums on September 30.

Dyn’s corporate headquarters are in New Hampshire.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Used Pallet Racks

Submitted by: Camille Howe

Used pallet racks save companies as much as 40% of the purchase cost of new equivalents. Used pallet racking by Easy Rack is available in all standard types, sizes, and styles on a nationwide basis. Pallet racking systems can also be custom designed with the assistance of an Easy Rack material handling specialist. They can be built to match interior warehousing conditions, terrain, specific climate, and the seismic environment of a particular region of the country.

Our most popular form of used pallet racking is the teardrop design.

This design is the industrial standard for most industrial racking applications. Used teardrop pallet racks are constructed using a boltless design that makes assembly and adjustment easier. This also makes the platform much more stable and prevents it from buckling in the middle. Used teardrop pallet racking is braced with heavy channel steel and supported by tensile steel columns that keep the entire structure immobile and thus much more stable when storing a large amount of weight.

Industrial and Heavy duty used pallet racking is built for fork truck access in high traffic areas. Used pallet racking of this capacity can handle up to 48,000 pounds of weight. These systems are typically custom built with industrial strength, structural steel in order to withstand accidental forklift collisions.

Used pallet rack decking is usually made from wire. Wire decking typically comes in wither waterfall, reverse waterfall, or lay-in design. Steel decks are used for the most heavy-duty industrial storage provided they comply with fire codes.

In medium and light duty storage, wire decks are generally preferred because of fire control issues. If the sprinkler system in a warehouse or factory is triggered, water can flow between the mesh of the wire without being stopped by a solid platform. The opposite is true with wood and other forms of solid decking. In fact, many fire codes now require wire decking for this reason.

Custom-built used pallet racking is available upon request. Two of our most popular system types are warehouse pallet systems and structural pallet systems.

Used warehouse pallet racking is built to organize and store materials that anticipate future expansion. These systems are designed so they can be adapted and expanded as the size and storage needs of a facility increases. Custom designs allow for modifications to maximize vertical cube and floor space, depending on the direction of the expansion. This offers a company the most flexible storage system within safety parameters and optimizes efficient forklift access to materials.

Used Structural Pallet Racking is built for impact resistance in high traffic areas. Easy Rack builds structural upright systems in a variety of well-known, standard styles such as Inca, Sturdibilt, Steel King, Frazier, Arco, and Speedrack.

If you are uncertain which type of used pallet rack, supports, system style, or deck you require for your organization, it is best to have a custom system built to the exact specifications of your storage facility, the parameters of your operations, and the changes anticipated due to forecasted growth. If you provide your Easy Rack specialist with these details, we can perform all the necessary calculations to build your system to safely maximize your storage space and improve your inventory control.

Citywide strike being discussed in Buffalo, N.Y.

Thursday, August 3, 2006

The Buffalo News is reporting that leaders of unions representing city employees in Buffalo, New York, met on Wednesday to discuss a possible ‘citywide strike.’ If the unions decided on a strike, firefighters, police officers, teachers and many other city employees would not show up for work.

The News is reporting that employees are upset about the wage-freeze which was put into effect when the Control Board took control of the city’s finances 27 months ago. Some employees even call the wage freeze “working class genocide.”

“Genocide of the working class is also illegal,” president of the Police Benevolent Association, Robert P. Meegan Jr., said to reporters when told that a strike would be illegal, after the meeting.

“We don’t expect to see any job actions with the bargaining units directly under the city administration. The fact that their legal counsel wouldn’t let [unions] comment any further speaks for itself,” said mayor of Buffalo, Byron W. Brown in reference to New York state‘s Taylor Law which makes striking illegal.

Members of the Control Board have refused to comment to the press about the option to strike.

A lawsuit has been filed by the Police Benevolent Association‘s union which would allow workers to strike if a judge grants permission to do so.

Honda recalls fire risk cars

Saturday, January 30, 2010

Honda have issued a recall for 646,000 cars around the world due to a potential fault that could cause a fire. The recall involves the ‘Jazz’ range of cars, which is known by its alternative name, Fit, in some countries.

water intrusion into the power window switch housing may in some instances cause a short circuit

Three incidents involving the problem, caused by a defective master switch, have been reported worldwide, two in the US and one in South Africa. In September 2009, Vanilla Nurse, a two-year old girl, was sleeping in one of the models, when the hatchback in Cape Town caught fire. Following the accident, Honda “launched an extensive investigation to determine the cause of the incident,” according to a statement issued today. Although they could not isolate the cause of the fire, “the investigation has shown that water intrusion into the power window switch housing may in some instances cause a short circuit, which in exceptional circumstances may lead to potential damages”.

Just 10% of cars are expected to need new switches. The remainder will need a waterproof skirt in order to keep water out.

Rival Toyota was forced to recall vehicles on Thursday, citing floor mats that may stick accelerator pedals to the floor. There are fears that Toyota may have to widen their recall to cover up to eight million cars.

The Advantages Of Completing An Mbbs Abroad

byAlma Abell

It can be very challenging for students to gain admissions to medical schools in India. For many students and families, a better option is to consider completing an MBBS abroad.

The MCI, the Medical Council of India, must approve any medical school that an Indian student wishes to attend if he or she wants to practice medicine in India after graduation. MCI has approved universities and colleges in many different countries to allow India students that meet the criteria of the school and that are accepted to earn their MBBS abroad.

While students can study in Russia, China, the Ukraine, Poland, Australia as well as many other countries around the world, these are some definite advantages in completing your study in an American University. This includes universities in the West Indies, which offer beautiful, safe and state-of-the-art campuses and accommodations as well as a lower cost of attending a continental American medical school.

See a New Country

One of the reasons that students may choose the West Indies as their destination to complete their MBBS abroad is the difference in the Caribbean from India. On the island of St. Lucia, for example, students will have a range of opportunities throughout the school year to explore, see and try new activities and to enjoy this island paradise.

Study Under Highly Recognized Faculty

For many students, choosing an international location to complete their MBBS allows for training and study under some of the most recognized doctors and researchers in the world.

American universities and colleges often have guest speakers, guest lecturers, and even faculty members that are highly experienced and experts in their own area of medical expertise. This can provide insight and help students to develop a focus for their own careers as doctors. Go to website for more information.
