2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

SEPTA buys rail cars from NJ Transit to deal with crowding

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

As gas prices have risen in the United States, the regional transport authority for southeastern Pennsylvania, SEPTA, has seen a sharp increase in ridership, which has caused overcrowding on the trains.

“As fuel prices have continued to rise, SEPTA ridership has steadily increased and is the highest in 18 years,” said SEPTA General Manager Joseph Casey. Monthly ridership was 22 percent higher last month than a year ago.

“They have crushed loads on their rail lines, already where people are standing, and there’s not enough seats,” said Rich Bickel, the director of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.

“At peak times some railcars are standing room only and commuter parking lots are nearly full. All Regional Rail lines are running near full capacity and the train station parking lots are at about 90 percent capacity or more,” SEPTA spokesperson Felipe Suarez said.

While SEPTA awaits new Silverliner V trains from Hyundai Rotem, which begin arriving in 2009, it had hoped to lease eight rail cars from New Jersey Transit, at an agreed-upon rate of US$10,000 per month. However, due to problems with insurance and liability indemnification, the deal fell through, according to Casey.

SEPTA has entered a new agreement to purchase the eight rail cars from NJ Transit. The transit authority will pay US$670,000 for the cars and assorted supplies plus one additional inoperative car which will be used for spare parts. The rail cars will be operated using a SEPTA provided locomotive as they are not self-propelled.

The cars are being disposed of by NJ Transit because it has switched from single-floor cars to double-decker cars.

SEPTA is expecting to raise US$3.1 million by selling rail that has been out of service since 1981 at auction.

New Japanese 2 Day Diet A Natural Alternative

By Lisa Phi

Do you want to lose weight quickly and naturally? The Japanese 2-day diet combines potent herbs and other natural ingredients to help in your endeavor. Read on for answers to three frequently asked questions.

If you want to lose weight quickly and naturally, the Japanese 2-day diet may be for you. Combining potent herbs and other natural ingredients, they diet has proven effective for many people in their weight loss endeavors. Below are answers to 3 frequently asked questions about the Japanese 2-day diet.

What are the most commonly used ingredients in the new Japanese 2-day diet?

One ingredient, lingzhi, comes from a mushroom that has been used in Chinese medicine for more than 4,000 years, making it one of the oldest mushrooms known to have been used in medicine. In Chinese, the word lingzhi means ‘herb of spiritual potency,’ and is sometimes referred to as the ‘mushroom of immortality’ because of its presumed health benefits. In ancient times, it was rare and precious, and was only available to Oriental royalty. Luckily, modern farming techniques make it more available today. Other ingredients commonly found include polyphenols, Coenzyme Q10, cocoa extract, and amino acids.

How does the Japanese 2-day diet work?

Most plans include taking one herbal pill before breakfast for two days. On the third and fourth day, two pills are taken before breakfast. The natural ingredients in them work in several ways.

Reduces fat absorption

First of all, ingredients in the Japanese 2-day diet remove up to 85 percent of the fat from your dietary intake. This blocking of fat absorption dramatically reduces the amount of fat that remains in the body after each meal. The ingredients also seem to prevent carbohydrates and sugars from turning into fats, thus further reducing the fat deposits in the body. After being on the diet for awhile, you may notice a marked reduction of fat in areas that normally store it, such as your belly, buttocks, thighs, and arms.

Promotes fat burning

Secondly, the ingredients in the Japanese 2-day diet promote fat burning. They speed up the body’s metabolic rate for 24 hours, so that you are losing weight even while asleep. With appropriate exercise, fatty areas in the body are quickly firmed and toned.

Reduces appetite

Thirdly, the ingredients in the Japanese 2-day diet have hunger reducing qualities. Many on the diet say that their appetites were greatly lessened, helping them to control their caloric intake throughout the day.

Detoxifies the body

Finally, the ingredients in the Japanese 2-day diet promote detoxification of the body, ridding it of toxins that have built on in the organs for years and years. The polyphenols found in the diet have strong antioxidant qualities, destroying free radicals and aiding in potent detoxification, ridding the body of toxic waste. They also prevent constipation, an unwanted side effect found while on some diets.

Other benefits

You may be surprised to find that cocoa extract is an active ingredient in weight loss supplements. Cocoa extracts contain antioxidants which support the immune system, but more importantly, studies have shown that they also improve the mood, increase energy levels, and act as a diuretic. The cocoa bean is also rich in magnesium and tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin, whose high levels have been associated with a more positive mood. Any dieter who has faced mood swings, tiredness, and bloating can appreciate the relief cocoa extracts can bring.

Coenzyme Q10, also found in the Japanese 2-day diet, is a powerful antioxidant with many benefits. It has been found to increase the body’s metabolism, and has also been shown to boost the immune system, aid in cardiovascular health, and protect against free radicals.

Who should not use the Japanese 2-day diet?

Pregnant women, children, and those with liver problems should check with their physician before starting any kind of weight loss problem or taking medicinal herbs.

About the Author: In general, the Japanese are thinner than their Western counterparts, partially due to a diet rich in fish and vegetables, but also perhaps due in part to their extensive knowledge and use of herbs. For more information on the Japanese 2-day diet, visit

Efforts to cap Deepwater Horizon oil spill delayed again

Correction — May 11, 2011 This article incorrectly describes BP as ‘British Petroleum’. In fact, such a company has not existed for many years as BP dropped this name when becoming a multinational company. The initials no longer stand for anything.

Sunday, May 16, 2010

An attempt to cap the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has hit yet another obstacle, reported officials from British Petroleum (BP).

Friday night’s attempt to install a 6-inch (15.2cm) tube into the leaking drill pipe was only the latest in a series of efforts by BP to stop or slow down the spill. Previously, the oil company had tried to enclose the pipe with a large container dome, and then lowered a smaller “top hat” container dome. The siphon tube method is designed to reduce the amount of oil flowing into the ocean, but is not a permanent solution to stopping the leak altogether. It will draw the oil from the broken pipe to a tanker at the surface, said BP.

The tube was to be inserted into the broken pipe by robotic submarines, but the attempt on Friday to do so was unsuccessful, causing it to be taken back up for changes. The problem was a metal frame on the tube, which had changed position and this prevented the tube sent down from the drill ship Discover Enterprise from connecting. The tube had not been inserted into the leaking drill pipe before it was brought back up.

BP said that it would try again Saturday night (local time) to slow the leak using a reconfigured tube. If this attempt is unsuccessful, they will use the smaller dome to cap the leak, and may also try to plug the leak by covering it with trash, mud, or concrete. The company is already in the process of drilling relief wells to completely stop the leak, but this is expected to take several more months. The amount of oil currently leaking from the pipe is disputed, and BP said it has spent several hundred million US dollars in response to the oil spill.

BP was also given permission yesterday by the US Coast Guard and the Environmental Protection Agency to use chemical oil dispersants to combat the spill.

Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.
