Food with cancer-causing dye recalled in Britain

Saturday, April 30, 2005

The British Food Standards Agency (FSA) has announced a recall of foods containing banned dyes which increase the risk of cancer. The food products were sold at the Tesco, Waitrose, and Somerfield supermarkets.

A Bristol company called “Barts Spices” found the illegal Para Red substance in their Barts Ground Paprika, which was sold in 48g and 46g jars with a “Co-op” label. The batch codes on the affected products are 5032 and 5089 (expiration Dec 2007), and 5075 (expiration February 2007).

Tesco also found that their 130g package of BBQ rice cakes (expiration November and December 2005) contained both Para Red and Sudan I.

“It would be very prudent to assume that it could be a genotoxic carcinogen,” FSA scientific advisers told reporters.

“As a company committed to supplying only the very finest quality food ingredients, we took the immediate decision to withdraw our ground paprika spice from all outlets selling the product and advertised a product recall in the national press,” a Barts Spices spokesman said in a statement.

Sudan I is only authorized for industrial use to colorize petroleum products, such as shoe polish. Para Red and Sudan I are banned under the British Colours in Food Regulations of 1995.

Britain last went through a major food recall in February, when Worcester Sauce was found to contain chili powder dyed with Sudan 1.

Armed troops take control of Suva, Fiji

Thursday, November 30, 2006

Armed Fijian soldiers took control of the streets of Suva, Fiji just before dawn

In a show of force, the troops fired a mortar into the harbour and over Nukulau Island, where George Speight, leader of the Fiji Coup of 2000, is currently serving a term of life imprisonment for his role in the overthrow of the constitutional government. Most of the mortar rounds fell into the ocean.

Soldiers, travelling in a convoy of trucks, set up barricades on key roads that led into the central business district of Suva while others patrolled the city.

Major Neumi Leweni, a military spokesman, said that the activity is not a military coup in disguise. “The exercise is in anticipation of any foreign intervention and the [Fiji military] is taking all precautionary measures.” He pointed out to sea where an Australian black hawk helicopter had crashed and where three Australian warships were moored. Australian officials said the ships were there in case Australian citizens needed to be evacuated.

The black hawk helicopter that had crashed was attempting to land on the HMAS Kanimbla, and its passengers were Special Air Service soldiers. Referring to the crash, Major Leweni said: “[It] just confirms that there are other forces out there and that is exactly why we are doing this exercise”.

Talks in New Zealand between Laisenia Qarase, Prime Minister of Fiji, and , military commander Commodore Frank Bainimarama concluded without an agreement. Winston Peters, foreign minister for New Zealand, said the talks were “lengthy, serious and meaningful”, but ultimately unsuccessful. Mr. Qarase said the three hour talks were not long enough to get to any conclusion, “…it was a good start and there is need for further consultations on some of the issues.”

Mr Qarase arrived at Nadi via a Royal New Zealand Air Force plane and then flew on an Air Chatham Islands plan to Suva. He was met by questioning media. Mr Qarase remained quiet. Commodore Bainimarama also said nothing to the awaiting media when he arrived in Fiji on a commercial flight.

Mr Qarase has requested that all regional foreign ministers come to a meeting being held in Sydney, Australia tomorrow that is related to the coup threats.

Countries that are part of the Pacific Forum are able to help other member countries, if the government asks for help.

Ambassadors from the United States of America, Australia and Britain have all met with Fijian military officers to seek insurances that there wasn’t going to be a coup. Major Lewini responded angrily, “[It is] inappropriate for a civilian diplomat to visit a military camp and seek to speak directly to officers,” he said.

“I’m not aware anyone’s threatening foreign intervention. I can assure you New Zealand isn’t,” Helen Clark, Helen Clark, Prime Minister of New Zealand, said.

At the same time, Andrew Hughes, police commissioner for Fiji, is currently on leave in Brisbane following threats. Moses Driver will now act as the police commissioner.

The military has said they will “clean up” the government if the armed forces do not get three controversial bills passed and all investigations into senior military officers are dropped.

The military has said that they do not need police permission to conduct such exercises.

Mistakes To Avoid When Attending An English School In Miami

byAlma Abell

For those people coming from another country, or even another state, to attend an English school in Miami there are some definite things that you should plan to do over the period of time that you are in the city.

Of course, you want to make sure that you attend each and every one of your classes scheduled through the English school in Miami. Most classes are designed intentionally, at least at the top schools, to provide you with time to get out and explore the city.

The top schools are strategically located in areas, such as South Beach, which offer a virtually limitless opportunity to see the sights, enjoy fine dining, do some shopping and even take trips to local attractions either through the school or on your own. Some students still may have difficulty in planning their off-campus time and end up making the following mistakes during their English school in Miami.

Staying Isolated

Learning English, just like learning any language, is all about talking with others. If you stay isolated in your room or in your apartment between classes you don’t have true immersion in the language. This is also true if you only spend time with one or two people from your class.

While it may be a challenge for some people when attending an English school in Miami get to know all your classmates and spend time with other students, faculty and trainers at the school.

Not Seeing the City

Miami is a beautiful city with lots to see and do. This is true if you enjoy hanging around on the beach, shopping at unique boutiques or going out for some amazing international cuisine and nightlife.

Remember, just going to different parts of the city and taking in local attractions, events and activities is a great way to learn more about the city and the surrounding locations.

Part of attending an English school in Miami is also learning about the culture of the USA, which is very distinct. In Miami there are many different cultural areas that you can visit to get a true feel for the variety of culture within the city. This is very similar to the variety of cultural groups and experiences throughout the state and even the country.

Demonstrators protest Condoleezza Rice’s trip to Australia

Thursday, March 16, 2006

Anti-war demonstrators in Sydney, Australia on Thursday dubbed U.S. Secretary of State Dr Condoleezza Rice a “war criminal” and “murderer.” Two protesters were evicted and five people were arrested during protests against the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Dr Rice, on a three-day trip to Australia, said she understood why people found it hard to be positive about Iraq when all they saw on their television screens was violence.

Soon after Rice began her speech at the University of Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music, two protesters shouted from the rear of the auditorium, “Condoleezza Rice, you are a war criminal,” and “Iraqi blood is on your hands and you cannot wash that blood away.” Standing with their palms towards her, the young man and woman repeated their accusation until security intervened to remove them from the hall.

About 15 minutes into Rice’s address, a third protester appeared at a balcony door, interrupting her speech as she referred to freedom. “What kind of freedom are you talking about? You are a murderer,” said the demonstrator before he was quietly escorted from the hall. “I’m very glad to see that democracy is well and alive here at the university,” she said.

In her speech, Rice sought to justify the U.S. occupation of Iraq, describing Iraqis as now more free. One student asked about abuses committed by U.S. forces at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. She said the abuses had made her “sick to her stomach.” However, she defended Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where human rights groups say detainees are held in inhumane conditions and in detention flouting international laws.

Before Rice began her speech, about 50 protesters were gathered at the front gates of the Conservatorium. The group were confronted by police on horseback and by police dogs. Police used the horses to charge into the group of activists and push them back, as a police helicopter hovered.

A police spokeswoman said the group was blocking pedestrian access to the building and that police had spent more than 20 minutes warning them to move. The police then moved in and pushed the crowd back 20 metres. Police say five people have been charged with “hindering police in the execution of their duties.”

The “Stop the War Coalition” says Rice is a “war criminal” and is not welcome in Australia. The group’s spokeswoman, Anna Samson, says the protest is one of many planned in the lead-up to the third anniversary of the invasion and occupation of Iraq on March 20.

Paddy Gibson, from the University of Sydney’s Student’s Council, says the protest is in opposition to the Iraq war, and to the use of the University of Sydney’s campus to host Rice, “the most powerful woman in the world,” who they say is a war criminal. “They’re saying, ‘… you’ve got Sydney Uni’s support to stand up and peddle your murderous hate speeches,’ which is what we see it,” he said.

“You’ve got 180,000 people killed, as we said, for no other reason than strategic control of the region’s oil resources. And the anti-Muslim racism that’s been whipped up to justify this war is being felt by Sydney University students,” said Mr Gibson.

Reflections, Lichtenstein, two new exhibitions at Edinburgh’s Modern One

Saturday, March 14, 2015

This weekend saw the opening of two new exhibitions at Edinburgh’s National Gallery of Modern Art. Wikinews attended Thursday’s press preview for the event where a full contingent of the capital’s press turned out to see the striking collection of paintings, photographs, and other works. Presented below are a selection of images captured at the preview.

REFLECTIONS: A Series of Changing Displays of Contemporary Art, billed as a showcase of a “diverse range of internationally-renowned contemporary and modern artists” is to display major works from the Gallery’s permanent collection, alongside important loans. Alongside this broad range of works, a three-room display of pieces on-loan from the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation — with a dramatic painted steel relief, ‘borrowed’ from the Tate in London — runs from March 14 through to January 10 next year.

Admission to both exhibitions is free; being located in Dean, to the north-west of Edinburgh’s city centre, a free Gallery bus service is available.

Iran’s morality police crack down on un-Islamic dress

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

The Iranian police forces have faced criticism from Ayatollah Hashemi Shahrudi, the head of the judiciary who was appointed by Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for their re-invigorated campaign to do away with un-Islamic dress.

Ayatollah Shahroudi proclaimed, “Tough measures on social problems will backfire and have counter-productive effects.” Others have, of course, made it clear that un-Islamic dress can lead to moral corruption, engender innumerable vices, and hurt the Islamic character of the nation.

Some believe that no one had any issue with the creation of an Islamic atmosphere. The core of the matter revolves around the implementation of the Islamic dress code; additionally, heavy-handed measures should be shunned. For instance, Mehdi Ahmadi, information head of Tehran’s police, told Al Jazeera: “Some citizens may complain about the way the law is being enforced but they all agree with the plan itself.”

According to one student, “You simply can’t tell people what to wear. They don’t understand that use of force only brings hatred towards them, not love.” Nevertheless, Hojatoll-Islam Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi, Iran’s interior minister who is in charge of policing, prognosticated positive feedback from the populace when he said, “People are unhappy with the social and moral status of the society. They expect that the fight against social insecurity be properly implemented.” Thus, Hujjat al-Islam Pour-Mohammadi re-iterated the necessity of proper implementation and methodology towards the restoration of morality in the Islamic Republic. Islamic officials and religious people affirm that this is indispensable to promote righteousness, curb sin, and bring open sinners to justice.

Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979, hijab became mandatory in Iran for every woman including foreigners after over 98% of citizens voted for an Islamic government. Women may face caning up to 74 strokes for failing to observe hijab. In this recent crackdown, the authorities have arrested many citizens throughout the country. Not only have women been taken into custody for their hair being uncovered on their foreheads and tight clothes that show body shapes, For men they need to cover from knee to their waist as according to Sharia. Even a foreign journalist was detained because the photograph on her press card was indecent.

It has not been clear whence the directive for the re-newed clampdown emanated. Some have blamed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad while Gholam Hossein Elham, the government spokesman, stated to reporters, “The police work as agents of the judiciary to confront crimes. The government as an executive body does not interfere in the affairs of the judiciary.” The following pre-election speech seems to corroborate this latter statement:

In reality, is the problem of our people the shape of the hair of our children? Let our children arrange their hair any way they wish. It doesn’t concern me and you. Let you and me overhaul the basic problems of the nation. The government should fix the economy of the nation and improve its atmosphere…[It should] better psychological security and support the people. People have variegated tastes. As if now the arch obstacle of our nation is the arrangement of our kids’ hair and the government disallowing them <He chuckles>. Is this the government’s responsibility? Is this the people’s merit? In actuality, this is the denigration of our people. Why do you underestimate and belittle the people? It is the real issue of our nation that one of our daughters donned a certain dress? Is this the issue of our nation and the problem of our nation?

Microsoft Axapta Dynamics Ax: Brazilian Portuguese Version Consultant Highlights

By Andrew Karasev

Axapta/Microsoft Dynamics AX short overview. Navision Axapta was designed by Navision Software, shortly before its acquisition by Microsoft Great Plains Business Solutions. Navision Software had tremendous success in Europe and partially in North America with Navision Attain. Some IT commentators believe that Microsoft purchased Navision Software because it had European clientele and Microsoft with its mid-market ERP Microsoft Great Plains was present in USA, Latin America, Canada, UK, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand only. If this is true – Axapta was kind of in the position to still proof itself – Navision Axapta was targeted to upper mid-market and probably in the time (2001/2002) Microsoft was not yet ready openly compete with high-end ERP brands, such as Oracle Financials, Oracle Applications, PeopleSoft, JDEdwards, SAP R/3. However since 2005 Axapta sees very high interest both in Western Europe/UK and USA among the Microsoft Business Solutions VARs. Plus – on emerging markets, such as Brazil, Russia, East Europe – Axapta has very good positions and ‘competes’ with Navision – in the good meaning of this word – number of Axapta implementations in East Europe is comparable with the number of Navision implementations

— Modern Design. Axapta was designed by Navision Software at the very end of 20th and the beginning of 21st centuries. Regardless of how nice it could sound – Axapta has the most recent design among MBS ERP systems: Microsoft Dynamics GP/Great Plains Software Dynamics (beginning of 1990th – Great Plains Dexterity platform), Microsoft Navision – Navision Attain – Microsoft Dynamics Navision (middle of 1990th with C/SIDE, C/ODBC and other proprietary technologies)

— Object Oriented Design. This word itself might be slightly outdated – we should probably talk about multi-tiered functional application logic and the way to modify/customize it. Axapta designers analyzed and took into consideration a lot of issues they formerly had with Attain as well as general ERP/MRP development trends and directions. This is why Axapta/Dynamics AX has tremendous potential

— Localization. Here we are switching to Brazilian thematic. Brazilian localization has two sides: Brazilian tax code and Brazilian Portuguese language translation. Tax Engine localization was subcontracted to India and the beta testing was done by Brazilian Microsoft VARs: XPTA and Alba Spectrum. Screen translation was minor issue and should be considered as successful. Regarding Brazilian tax code localization details we would like you to read bright articles, written by Roberto Kowas, who demonstrated Axapta tax localization in Sao Paulo to MBS partners in December 2005.

— Customization, Integration, Reporting. MorphX with X++ programming language. From the integration and report writing standpoints we could expect Microsoft move with Visual Studio.net and Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services. You probably know that currently Microsoft is implementing so-called Project Green, now Microsoft Dynamics project, aiming in synchronization and possible future modulation of all Microsoft ERP/CRM products: Microsoft Dynamics GP, Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Microsoft Dynamics AX, Microsoft Dynamics SL, Microsoft Dynamics CRM

Wikinews interviews former Salt Lake City mayor and 2012 presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Former Salt Lake City mayor and human rights activist Rocky Anderson took some time to discuss his 2012 U.S. presidential campaign and the newly-created Justice Party with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Anderson served as mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years (2000–2008) as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he enacted proposals to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, reformed its criminal justice system, and positioned it as a leading sanctuary for refugees. After leaving office, Anderson grew critical of the Democratic Party’s failure to push for impeachment against President George W. Bush, and for not reversing policies on torture, taxes, and defense spending. He left the party earlier this year and announced that he would form a Third party.

Anderson officially established the Justice Party last week during a press conference in Washington D.C.. He proclaimed “We the people are powerful enough to end the perverse government-to-the-highest-bidder system sustained by the two dominant parties…We are here today for the sake of justice — social justice, environmental justice and economic justice.” The party promotes campaign finance reform and is attempting to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is currently working on ballot access efforts, and will hold a Founding Convention in February 2012 in Salt Lake City.

Among other issues, Anderson discussed climate change, health care, education, and civil liberties. He detailed his successes as mayor of Salt Lake City, stressed the importance of executive experience, and expressed his views on President Barack Obama and some of the Republican Party presidential candidates. He spoke in depth about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, with whom he worked during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and fellow Utahan, former governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr..

Cathedral Square, Sydney, Australia —Wikinews attended the Wheelchair Rugby Tri-Nations Series in Cathedral Square, Sydney, ongoing from Wednesday. The venue is Cathedral Square, Sydney, which is adjacent to Hyde Park. The Sydney Central Business district is on the other side of the park. An outdoor stadium has been constructed specifically for the tournament, which is believed to be the first time an international wheelchair rugby tournament has been held outdoors. This choice was validated by the fine and warm weather. Free sunscreen was given to the crowd.

The Opening Ceremony was officiated by Australian Paralympic Committee Chief Executive Officer Jason Hellwig. In attendance were the Premier of New South Wales, Barry O’Farrell, the Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney, Robyn Kemmis, and Paralympic swimmer Matthew Cowdrey. A large crowd, mostly consisting of school groups, was entertained by boy band Justice Crew singing their hit Best Night.

Each team is to play the others two twice, on Wednesday September 18 and Thursday September 19. Finals are to be held on Friday. All three teams are highly ranked internationally. The United States team is ranked number one in the world. It won bronze at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, gold at the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, and bronze at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, and is the current world champion. This is its first visit to Australia since the 2000 Summer Paralympics.

The Australian team, known as the Steelers, is ranked second in the world. It won silver in Beijing and gold in London. The team is almost unchanged from the one that won in London. Greg Smith has become the assistant coach.

The first game, held immediately after the Opening Ceremony, was between the United States and Australia. The United States proved the better team, forcing errors and turnovers. Three turnovers in the first quarter were especially costly for the Steelers, who lost 56–43.

The second game was held at 17:30 under lights. The crowd was small, but there were a number of New Zealand fans in the crowd, including a few Maori. Two of the New Zealand players are also Maori. The well-disciplined United States team proved too good for the Wheel Blacks as well, who lost 58–40 in an entertaining contest.

The third game was at 19:30, between Australia and New Zealand. The Australians led the whole game, which was nonetheless entertaining to the last. In the dying seconds of the game, Australia’s Ryley Batt shunted a stalling New Zealand player across the line to force him to score, then threw the ball to team mate Chris Bond, who raced for the line at high speed but was beaten by the buzzer. Australia won 61–48.

The New Zealand team, known as the Wheel Blacks, is ranked tenth in the world. It won gold in Athens.

Highlights of the tournament are scheduled to be shown on Foxtel Sports in Australia on September 28 and 29.

Save Your Thighs From Lumpy Cellulite!

Submitted by: Angelo Johnson

Have you ever pitched your thigh and noticed little lumpy stuff that looks like cottage cheese? If you have then you have cellulite and you are not alone out there. Cellulite is made up of a collection of fat that push up against tissue underneath a persons skin and it then causes the skin to create dimples. There are many things that cause cellulite one s genes, your age, the thickness of skin, and a persons gender can reflect whether they have cellulite and how much they have.

The best thing to do is reduce the amount of cellulite you have it to reduce the amount of excessive body fat that you have. If you are overweight and have cellulite you could eat fewer calories and exercise more. Combining a strengthening program with an aerobic program has been proven to be the best fighter against cellulite.

One thing that seems to work to reduce visibility of cellulite is use a self tanning product or go to a tanning salon. Cellulite doesn t look as noticeable on darker skin, so it creates the illusion that it isn t there.

However, cellulite isn t always a bad thing; it does help us out in some ways. It creates insulation for the body keeping us warmer and regulates the temperature of our bodies as well. During pregnancy when a women is lactating it stores fat so the body has a good amount of calories available. It also serves as an endocrine organ the helps balance the hormones in old age.

Doing a regular detox will help reduce the cellulite on your body. The lymphatic system of the body helps to circulate blood flow and carry away toxins from tissues. Keeping this clean and flowing properly will help in preventing cellulite from forming in the first place. There are also other ways to stimulate blood circulation, massage, deep breathing ,and exercise all help the lymphatic system.

Ever notice that women get cellulite more than men? A woman s skin is completely different than the skin from a man. When a woman s body releases estrogen it builds up fluids in fatty tissues. Estrogen also makes sure that it stores excess fat around the hips, thighs, and buttocks. This is because women need to make sure that they have enough energy for pregnancy. Pregnancy can also release a hormone that is called relaxin. This loosens tissue in the cervix and widens the pelvic bone making room for baby to pass into the world. Age and genetics play a huge role in whether or not you have cellulite or how much you have. Our bodies tend to break down instead of build up as we get older. But with regular detox and exercise and keeping your body balanced we can prevent it from happening any sooner than it should.

Liposuction is a popular treatment for cellulite. It is quick, and simple but it will not get rid of cellulite forever. In order to do that you have to go through extensive life changes. Many doctors will tell you that this is not a very good treatment for cellulite because it is only temporary. Some other things that you can do is release stress, yoga is great for that and it will elp ton and tighten musles. Get a massage, putting pressure on the muscles , kneading the skin like dough and rubbing in a circular motion will help to increase blood flow. Another thing to try is cellutone, it is a safe all natural cream that is the only product on the market today that has been proven to have long lasting results that don t use drugs or ingredients such as caffeine in them. You can find this product at Alternative Health Supplements. Remember that keeping a healthy diet and detoxing will help as well as regular exercise are keys to preventing cellulite in the first place. Taking a multivitamin will help to get your body the nutrients that it needs that it doesn t get from your diet and keep hormones balanced by gently supporting the endocrine.
