U.S. TV networks look to past for future programming

Tuesday, March 22, 2005

Los Angeles, California — Four of six national television broadcast networks recently wooed potential advertisers for the 2005-2006 season with programming offerings in the new development phase. These included NBC, Fox, ABC and The WB. Two other networks, CBS and UPN, plan to preview their offerings March 24.

After four years of focusing on high-profile reality television, network executives are turning to the past for inspiration on scripted series. Some networks said they are “more consciously aggressive about developing shows” that recall such classics as Taxi and Barney Miller, Craig Erwich, a programming executive for Fox, told USA Today. In the same report, Kevin Reilly, NBC entertainment chief said, “I don’t think the answer has to be that it’s groundbreaking or something you’ve never seen before.”

But at least one ad buyer had reservations about the rear-view mirror technique. “Every network seems to be looking back rather than forward for programming ideas. The reminiscence factor may be good if you are looking for an older audience, but it may not be a way to bring in the younger audiences,” Laura Caraccioli-Davis, senior vice president and director of Starcom Entertainment told Mediaweek magazine.

A Mailbox Should Be Outstanding In Your Yard

A Mailbox Should Be Outstanding in Your Yard

by

Kathy Moran

We ve always taken for granted the ease with which we can communicate with people around the world. Long before the advent of e-mail, daily trips to our

mailboxes

brought us everything from anxiously anticipated cards, letters, and checks, to deeply dreaded bills, notices, and those bragging holiday newsletters from relatives we ve barely met.

Even before the telephone was invented, people relied upon the Post Office Department, forerunner of the United States Postal Service, as virtually the only way of corresponding long-distance. In colonial days, people sent messages back and forth through friends, merchants, clergymen, and others whose livelihoods involved traveling.

In those days, however, as most of the mail was going to, and coming from, their native England, the first official postal service for the colonists was established in 1633, mainly to handle this route. In keeping with the English custom of using taverns and coffee houses as repositories, the General Court of Massachusetts designated Richard Fairbanks Tavern, in Boston, as the official office for overseas mail.

In 1673, New York s Governor, Francis Lovelace, set up a postal route by which mail was delivered once a month between New York and Boston. Known as the Old Boston Post Road, it still exists as part of U.S. Route 1. In Pennsylvania, William Penn established the first post office in 1683.

In May of 1775, as the colonies were separating from England, a Continental Congress assembled in Philadelphia to establish an independent government. As the postal service had theretofore been controlled by the Crown, one of the delegates first orders of business was to organize a new system for delivering the mail. To accomplish this, they chose Benjamin Franklin to head a Committee of Investigation, which recommended in a report the appointment of a Postmaster General to the 13 colonies. After careful consideration, the Continental Congress named Franklin to that office on July 26, 1775.

Since that time, postal carriers have delivered the mail on foot, as well as by using horses, stagecoaches, ships, balloons, mules, helicopters, planes, trains, and automobiles. Instead of dropping it off at taverns or general stores, they bring it right to our mailboxes, which have also evolved throughout the years. Much more than simple tin containers for our letters, cards, and bills, they are often used as expressions of our personal styles, or extensions of our homes d cors.

CedarStore.com has a collection of fun, inventive mailboxes that are beautifully crafted from the finest decay-resistant woods, and built to last for years. Major explosion at Mt. Redoubt volcano in Alaska

Friday, April 4, 2008

The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) reported today a “significant explosive event” had occurred at Mount Redoubt in Alaska. Lightning was observed within an ash cloud that formed over the volcano. As a result the AVO raised the alert level to ‘warning’ and level ‘red’ for aviation. The event occurred at 6:00 a.m. (AKDT).

According to the Observatory, seismic activity caused a major lahar, similar to a mudslide or landslide, to occur in the Drift River Valley. Inhabitants of the Valley were advised to seek high ground and take immediate precautions against flooding. So far there are no reports of injuries or evacuations. Wikinews has e-mailed the AVO for a statement regarding the event, but has yet to receive a reply.

“Strong, but diminishing seismic activity is continuing as of 07:35 AKDT,” said the AVO on its website. At 9:18 a.m., the AVO reported that the event had ended. “Continuing seismic activity and web camera images indicate that low level emissions of steam, gas, and some volcanic ash are continuing to be emitted at the volcano at altitudes of [20,000 feet].” The AVO is sending a team to investigate the latest eruption which will include a fly-over to take readings on the gases being emitted.

The explosion sent volcanic ash which spread to “Homer, Anchor Point, and Seldovia” to an altitude of over 50,000 feet. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued an advisory stating that ash fall can be expected from “Ninilchik Southward through mid morning.” The advisory is scheduled to end at 10:00 a.m. (AKDT).

As a result of recent eruptions at Redoubt, half of the 6 million gallons of crude oil stored in the Drift Valley will be removed to a safer location. There is no word on when the move will take place. The storage facility is located just 22 miles from Redoubt.

Loss of integrity in underground city tunnel causes evacuation of Downtown Montreal

Sunday, August 26, 2007

A one-inch settlement of the roof of The Bay tunnel to the Montreal Metro caused authorities to evacuate 12 blocks of the Montreal downtown core.

Several people noticed water infiltration in the tunnel over the last few days. On Friday, August 24, at 1 p.m., while investigating another water infiltration incident, The Bay employees noticed that the ceiling of the tunnel portion of The Bay’s basement sales area had descended one inch over a 7 meter length. They subsequently called police. The police and firefighters evacuated the basement of the downtown Bay store. The police closed de Maisonneuve Boulevard from Aylmer Street to Union Street, over the area of the crack.

At 4 p.m., firefighters evacuated the Parkade Montreal Building and The Bay Department Store after finding pieces of concrete falling from the Parkade Montreal structure, a multi-story carpark with five levels of offices on top. They also evacuated the downtown portion of the Line 1 / Green Line of the Montreal Metro subway, from Lionel-Groulx to Berri-UQAM stations, and evacuated the McGill metro station, which is situated below The Bay tunnel. After consulting with city engineers, Centre 2001, the loading dock of the Bay and its Hertz car rental agency, Les Promenades Cathedrale underground shopping centre and office tower, and a neighbouring office tower to the Parkade were also evacuated. Police cordoned off an area from Bleury Street in the east to University Street in the west, and from Ste-Catherine Street in the south to President Kennedy Street to the north.

The closure of the Metro caused havoc to the Friday afternoon rush hour, as over 40,000 people regularly use the Green Line (Line 1) every day. Montreal Transit Corporation workers issued directions during the day, though some may not have been informed of a provisionary bus service to replace the lost subway service. Loudspeakers announced that commuters should use the unaffected Orange Line (Line 2), which has lines between 5 and 10 blocks south of Line 1 (Green Line), and also connects to Lionel-Groulx and Berri-UQAM stations.

The downtown area is intended to remain closed for at least the weekend, along with portions of the underground city, or RESO. The tunnel was built in 1966. For the last few days, city work crews have been working above the slab in question, digging a one meter trench to install a median and segregate a new bike path on de Maisonneuve Boulevard. The tunnel roof lies five meters below street level.

Residents of Montreal are frustrated with the crumbling infrastructure in and around the city, including the collapse of the de la Concorde Boulevard overpass over Autoroute 19 expressway last year, the shattering of a column holding up the Autoroute 720 Ville Marie elevated expressway last month, and other incidents.

British soldier killed in Afghanistan

Wednesday, July 5, 2006

The Ministry of Defence has named a British soldier from the 3 Para Battle Group who died while on patrol in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province.

The soldier, 19 year-old Private Damien Raymond Jackson, of South Shields, Tyne and Wear, came under fire from Taliban forces in the town of Sangin. He died while being given treatment.

His father, Daniel Jackson said: “I wish everyone to know just how extremely proud I am of my son Damien – of all that he has achieved in his lifetime and of the fact that he died, when duty called, protecting others, in the service of his country.

“A fine, upstanding South Shields lad, Damien was immensely proud to have achieved his ultimate ambition in becoming a member of the finest regiment in the British Army.”

He also condemned the government’s policy in Afghanistan, saying that UK forces are in “dreadful danger”. “We fully support the British Army in Afghanistan whilst in no way supporting or condoning a government policy, which has placed our young men and women in such dreadful danger.”

Private Jackson’s death means six British soldiers have died in the unstable Helmand region in the last four weeks. Since 2001 when operations began in Afghanistan, thirteen British soldiers have lost their lives.

On Saturday, two British soldiers were killed after a rocket-propelled grenade struck the headquarters they were in.

Prime Minister Tony Blair said he would give more resources to British troops to assist them in their fight against the Taliban, but he said the British Army has not yet made such a request.

“If they need more, we will make sure that they get more,” he told the House of Commons during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday.

Along with the Conservative Party leader David Cameron, Mr Blair also commended the efforts of British soldiers by praising their “extraordinary and heroic job”.

“They are fighting a battle that I think is important not just for the security of Afghanistan. It is important for the security of the wider world,” the Prime Minister said.

Approximately 4,000 British soldiers are stationed in Afghanistan, and almost 3,000 of them work in Helmand Province.

In general, they are in Afghanistan to help train the country’s troops, provide security, and assist with reconstruction. As 20% of the world’s opium is produced in Helmand Province, the main task for troops there is to control drugs lords.

Being Advanced With Medicine And Technology

If you are suffering from sleep deprivation, produces a cow-like snoring and maintains a compulsion to be sleepy all throughout the day, its not normal. Science calls this disorder Sleep Apnea (apnea means without breath) wherein the breathing patterns of a person repeatedly halts and starts when one is sleeping. The latest treatment against Sleep Apnea is called TAP or Thornton Adjustable Positioner, a customized oral appliance that the patient wears during sleep. By holding and keeping the lower jaw forward and not allowing the tongue and the throat tissues to collapse to the airway, it prevents snoring and sleep apnea.

A mobile phone sensor system for the senior citizens have been developed by Koreas Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute. With this new system, family members, doctors and nurses can be quickly informed about the situation of the elderly. Through GPS technology that links the hospitals computer to the sensor carried on the patients belt. The computer automatically calls the phone of the patient to check if the person is hurt. The sensor detects sudden movements like a fall or bumping into something. Studies are being undergone so that the product will be put under the operation of mobile phone companies so that any signal from the sensor can then be sent to any mobile phone.

If you know anyone who has experienced Angiography, you know that he will never recount the story of the experience without cringing or deep facial expression expressing pain both the physical and the financial pain, mind you. And now comes Super X-ray that saves one from the angiogram fatality caused by bacterial invasion and exposure to radiation that may eventually lead to cancer. According to studies, this new product will eliminate the use of some 1.3M cardiac catheterizations per annum. Although there have been debates on the radiation level this new technique can emit, more scientists have favored it for its accuracy.

The latest in high tech prosthetics has just come out: PROPIO Foot which is deemed to restore the zest of life and functionality to amputees. With Propio, artificial legs and hands are fitted using microprocessors so that they will be imbued with artificial intelligence which enables it to think for itself! This marvelous products boast of adjusting itself to diverse terrains and contains advanced censors that makes wonders for the foot like memorizing the habits of its user. It is also anatomically correct and friendly to its users albeit its seemingly complicated and sophisticated design. This product was developed by a company named Ossur.

Take anyone who has undergone Endroscopy and he would tell you the difficulties he experienced as he swallowed the flexible or rigid cable which, of course, can be a source of infection, over-sedation, and, worst, the harming of various body organs. The answer? The wireless capsule camera (which also has other names such as PillCam, video pill, Sayaka, or Endocapsule that enables one to view and see areas that the old-fashioned endoscopes have failed to display. This capsule traverses the path of the intestines after a patient takes it in through the mouth. Although it indeed takes a longer time to provide images, the ones it produces are clearer and of better quality.

South Korean men’s national goalball team defeats Algeria 4-3

Thursday, August 30, 2012

London, England — South Korea earned a 4–3 goalball victory against Algeria earlier today in the fifth match of the day at London’s Copper Box.

South Korean Sung-Wook Hong was the game’s leading scorer with 4 goals. He is a B2 classified blind competitor, though classification is largely irrelevant in goalball as all classified blind players wear masks to provide even levels of sight in the game.

The B2 classified Algerian Mohamed Mokrane led his team in scoring, with two points. From Chlef, he captains a side that qualified by winning the 2011 Africa Oceania Regional Championships in Sydney, Australia. His team comes into the Games having finished sixth at last year’s World Championships.

In a previous match today, Iran defeated China by a score of 9–5 after having been ahead 4–2 at the half.
