Airplane crashes into ocean in Micronesia

Saturday, September 29, 2018

Yesterday morning near the international airport located on Weno island of Chuuk state of the Federated States of Micronesia, Oceania a passenger airplane of model Boeing 737-800 flown by the Air Niugini carrier crashed into sea as its pilot missed the runway. All 47 people on board — by differing reports, 36 passengers and eleven crew or 35 passengers and twelve crew — survived.

The report by the international commercial aviation safety organization Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre indicated the crash coincided with a sudden intensification of the weather conditions. timeanddate.com-supplied data from CustomWeather reported rain showers at 9:40 a.m. local time, following cloudy conditions at 8:50 a.m.

The airplane reportedly landed around 9:30 a.m. local time, short of the runway by about 160 m to 200 m (about 525 to 650 feet), according to reports. Locals immediately began to rescue the passengers and crew on fishing boats. Officials arrived after about ten minutes, according to a witness quoted by The Guardian.

In an interview, a passenger alleged the crew started panicking and yelling, The Guardian reported. A first responder, Dr James Yaingeluo, also said the airplane crew were in panic. He said, “There was a little bit [of] chaos at first because everybody was really panicked and tried to get out of the plane […] other than that we were doing as much as we can. Luckily there are no casualties.”

Yaingeluo said nine people were taken to a hospital. Four people remained in hospital, one “seriously injured”, according to reports recounted by ABC News on Friday evening.

Flight 73 was coming from Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. Its destination was Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, with a stop at the Chuuk state.

Polarized Sunglasses Are Fun And Practical Visor Shades

Submitted by: Rob Acknots

Many people do not know what it means when they see sunglasses advertised as polarized sunglasses. This confuses many people. If you are like every other average person, you probably think that ordinary sunglasses are just fine, no need to change. You may wonder why anyone would bother paying the additional cost to have polarized lenses in their sunglasses. There are many reasons.

Polarized sunglasses have been shown to be better for your eyes, especially when one is out in the sun. They also offer the benefit of added protection one cannot get from standard eyeglasses. If you spend a significant amount of time out of doors, you will find that these glasses offer unparalleled protection. For those who play tons of sports, for example, golf, tennis or fishing, polarized sunglass can help you see better. You ll also be protected better.

Everyday we are told how important it is to protect our skin. There is, however, incredibly little said about wearing polarized lenses in sunglasses to help protect your eyes. Eye damage from sun exposure is easily acquired during the average human lifetime. Protect your eyes now so that you have solid eyesight in the future. Wonderful technology helps polarized sunglasses to neutralize the glare you get when the sun reflects off flat surfaces. This helps when driving no doubt! This is of course, due to scientific properties, however, the most important point is that you put polarized sunglasses on when you go outside.

This technology eliminates the need to squint when you look at a surface that is in direct sunlight. The polarized lenses in the sunglasses eliminate the horizontal rays with vertical polarizer, which make it possible for you to see clearly without strain or damage. For the lack of better term you can call them high definition sunglasses, due to improved vision through polarized sunglasses.

Virtually all sunglass designers advertise their products in a way that is geared towards certain groups of people, for example, those considering camping or even attending baseball games. Despite this, anyone can have polarized sunglasses and reap the benefits. Truck drivers often use polarised sunglasses for long driving runs. Many have reported less eye fatigue and fewer headaches.

Obtaining the utmost protection from UV rays and still maintaining true color when you look at objects is the goal behind the designer sunglasses containing polarized lenses. If you buy quality brands, you will ensure that you get good lenses with very little object or color distortion after long usage.

Almost all of the major designer lines have polarized sunglasses. The polarized sunglasses available today come in all different colors of lenses and in amazingly stylish designs that many Hollywood stars use. Oakley, Hobie, Arnette, Costs del Mar are companies known for making excellent designer frames and lenses.

If you decide to go on that weekend fishing trip, don t forget to take along a reliable pair of sunglasses to help protect your eyes and make seeing into the water easier. Take them along to a baseball game. Stop using old glasses that don t do the job-hop on the polarized sunglasses bandwagon.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.

Australian emergency services personnel exposed to asbestos

Wednesday, March 8, 2006

At least 250 members of Australia’s emergency services personnel in New South Wales have been informed that they could die from exposure to fatal levels of asbestos following emergency response training south of Sydney.

Members of the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) unit are thought to be at risk. They were told last week they may contract life-threatening illnesses following training on a demolition site at Holsworthy Army Barracks. The site was created to simulate rescues in the event of a terror attack or natural disaster. It has been regularly used by emergency services personnel since 2004.

Some of the emergency services personnel spent up to three weeks at a time crawling through the rubble.

Reports claim that when notified last week, senior personnel were left devastated. It can take decades for asbestos related illnesses to appear and can take up to 30 years before those exposed can be cleared of infection.

In addition to the emergency service personnel, doctors, nurses and hazardous material personnel could also be at a mild risk. Even Morris Iemma, premier of New South Wales, who visited the site has been warned he could be at risk.

According to The Daily Telegraph, a repected Sydney newspaper, it has been established that “No proper tests were done at the site before it became a training ground for hundreds of top-level rescuers in 2004″,”Personnel were kept in the dark for up to a year about the asbestos before being told last week”,”NSW public officials and a host of ministers may have been exposed”,”Ambulance chief Greg Rochford and Mr Mullins have been at the site and must face a health clearance”, and”The Dust Diseases Tribunal is conducting an investigation into the long-term impact the mass exposure could have on emergency services in NSW.”

Biohazardous Waste Disposal Every Individual’s Responsibility

Submitted by: Morris Kim

Biohazardous waste refers to infectious waste or biomedical waste containing infectious material or potentially infectious substances, like blood. Of special importance are sharp items like needles, blades, and pipettes that can cause injury while handling. Such items must be disposed of as per a statutory disposal policy. This holds true even while handling household medical waste, although medical wastes generated at home are generally not considered to be of serious health concern.

Household Medical Waste

Even though most wastes generated at home are not of serious concern, we need to be bothered about household waste that is infectious or biohazardous in nature. Such wastes are capable of causing disease to house inmates, if a person comes into contact with the biohazardous waste. For example, sharps, if contaminated by infectious blood, can cause deadly diseases like HIV/AIDS or Hepatitis B that can be fatal for the infected person.

What is the best way to handle hazardous waste generated at home? Here are a few important tips.

* Household waste is a solid waste that must be disposed of in a permitted municipal solid waste landfill. If you are unable to do it on your own, a good way to ensure this is by seeking assistance of one of the recognized medical waste disposal services. Waste disposal services handle biohazardous waste in a safe and scientific manner.

* The recommended guidelines for packaging are placing the waste in an opaque, puncture-resistant, and leak-proof container, sealing it properly and ensuring that the outside of the container is free from contamination. However, care should be taken not to mark the package, divulging the contents.

Medical or biohazardous wastes generated at hospitals, however must be first rendered non-infectious by autoclaving, incineration, or by any other efficient means before disposing of to a solid waste area. Hospitals and clinics generate a large amount of waste that is potentially unsafe for public health, if not properly handled. Environmental requirements dictate that such wastes must be handled, segregated, mutilated, disinfected, properly packed, and transported before final disposal.

In fact, it is the responsibility of the waste generator whether a medical establishment or a household to dispose of the biohazardous waste in the above manner. All medical facilities must register with the Department of Environmental Protection at least 30 days prior to waste generation. The Department of Environmental Protection will assign a biomedical waste generator registration number to each facility. Thereafter, each facility must mandatorily prepare a biomedical waste management plan that is appropriate for its type and size. The plan must include all details of proper management of biohazardous waste.

Coming back to the issue of dangerous household wastes, some examples of the most common items in this category are:

* Insecticides, herbicides, and rat poison

* Paint thinners and strippers

* Household polishes

* Fungicides

* Cosmetics

* Grease and solvents

* Batteries

* Lighter fluids

* Medical wastes

Since it is impossible to regulate every house in the United States, the EPA developed a household exemption, under which waste generated by normal household activities is exempt from the definition of biohazardous waste

You can do your bit to reduce household hazardous waste by buying only the amount you need, by donating unused products to friends or community organizations, and by properly recycling leftover hazardous household products. Safe disposal of waste is the responsibility of every individual. After all, biohazardous waste can cause catastrophic environmental hazards.

Students raise record amounts of money during Christmas fundraiser at Benet Academy, Illinois

Saturday, December 19, 2009

Students at Benet Academy in Lisle, Illinois, United States raised record amounts of money this year during their Christmas Drive fundraiser.

The annual two-week event is aimed at promoting the Christmas spirit in helping the poor and needy. Coordination of the fundraiser is a joint effort by the faculty and three students organizations—Student Government, National Honor Society (NHS), and Outreach. Donations from previous years have allowed Outreach to provide food and Christmas gifts to dozens of families during the holiday season. NHS in the past has provided blankets, winter gear, and toys to local families as well.

A semi-formal dance held on Dec. 5 kicked off the Christmas Drive this year. Two weeks of in-school fundraising efforts ensued, including several no-uniform days and Benet’s traditional Penny Wars. In that four-day activity, the four grade levels competed against each other to see who can collect the most pennies. Nickels, dimes, and quarters were allowed but had negative value in the class total. The seniors won this contest, allowing them to have a no-uniform day on Dec. 11. Other activities such as bake sales and a beard-growing contest raised money as well.

During an all-school assembly on Friday, the last day of the drive, Student Government President Kyle Marinko announced that preliminary calculations put the amount of donations at US$53,392.82, a record for the school. Last year’s drive collected approximately US$42,000. A final total has not been officially announced, since Student Government officials continue to count additional donations that have been received.

United States Department of Justice workers among government Wikipedia vandals

Thursday, February 2, 2006

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

In response to recent accusations that United States government employees have engaged in Wikipedia vandalism and other forms of perceived negative editing of articles, Wikipedia editors have set up a webpage listing all Wikipedia edits made through IP addresses that are allocated to the United States House of Representatives and other United States government agencies. The House IP address was briefly banned from editing Wikipedia articles in the wake of the initial controversy, but the ban was lifted on January 30 after Wikipedia administrators decided that there have been a number of valuable contributions made through the House and Senate IP addresses in addition to the controversial edits.

On January 31 and February 1, however, the U.S. House of Representatives’ common IP address, 143.231.249.141, were banned again for three hours due to vandalism. Because the IP address is shared by House staff members, it is uncertain whether or not the same person(s) responsible for the previous vandalism are also responsible for the latest.

Examples of contributions submitted through the House IP address included removing, “In 2005, he has come under scrutiny for accepting campaign contributions from embattled former house leader Tom Delay,” from the article on Thad McCotter, removing election statistics from the article on Dan Lungren, and, in the article on Marilyn Musgrave, changing the paragraph

“As a state legislator, Musgrave spent much of her time on social issues, particularly authoring bills to deny marriage rights and parental rights for gay and lesbian families. One of her final, failed bills would have made it much more difficult for same-sex parents to see their children in the hospital during an emergency. Musgrave also cast the only vote against legislation to give battered spouses paid leave from work.”

to

“As a state legislator, Musgrave spent much of her time on social issues, particularly authoring bills to protect children and the traditional definition of marriage, as well as gun owner’s rights.”

After the block from Wikipedia expired, the House of Representatives user continued to edit the article on Chris Shays. Chris Shays had co-sponsored a bill with Marty Meehan, whose staffers had previously been found to have been negatively editing Wikipedia entries, The American Civil Liberties Union said of the bill “key elements of Shays-Meehan violate the First Amendment right to free speech because the legislation contains provisions that would violate the constitutionally-protected right of the people to express their opinions about issues through broadcast advertising if they mention the name of a candidate.” All mentions of the bill were removed from the article. Also removed was a paragraph about Chris Shays raising $70,000 with House Speaker Dennis Hastert at a country club event.

Again, the IP address was blocked for an eight-hour period.

Wikipedia edits in Congress are not coming from the House of Representatives alone. An edit from the Senate in July removed references to a plagiarism scandal with Senator Joe Biden, who has informally said he may seek a Democratic nomination for president in 2008. As of February 4, 2006, the edit has not fixed by Wikipedia users.

IP addresses from the CIA, the Department of Justice, the Marines, and the Navy are listed on the site as having made several cases of vandalism. Some examples of vandalism from the Department of Justice IP ranges involve articles on TV and radio shows, a baseball player, or just complaining about their work. In addition to accusations of vandalism, there have also been accusations of government employees introducing perceived bias, political spinning, or misinformation into Wikipedia articles by adding or removing information.

These cases include articles on an Irish politician, and in the George W. Bush article, introducing accusations of Hugo Chavez being a dictator, and removing information covering the George W. Bush substance abuse controversy. In addition, a person using a Department of Justice IP address edited a page covering indicted former Republican Majority Leader Tom DeLay. The editor removed two paragraphs stating a judge ruled that Tom DeLay had broken state law by not disclosing over $600,000 of fundraising money, a quote from Tom DeLay in which he stated that it drives the Democrats crazy wondering why the Republican Party institutes pro-Israeli policy, and a subsection on controversies involving DeLay’s relatives. Edits to George W. Bush’s article were done within the span of an hour. Edits to Tom DeLay’s article were made within an hour as well, although followed by a shorter, minor second session of editing later that day.

An editor using a CIA IP address is accused of vandalizing an article on the current president of Iran. Editors using Marine and Navy IP addresses based in Pensacola, Florida are accused of vandalizing an article on a rock song and on former U.S. president Bill Clinton, and accused of adding racist comments to articles on an actor and Martin Luther King, Jr., and adding comments that are perceived to criticize the men and women in the Navy reserves.

The IP addresses of the Department of Justice, the CIA, and the Navy and Marines stationed in Pensacola, Florida were found using the American Registry for Internet Numbers at the official website. Neither the government nor the Wikimedia Foundation have released an official statement.

The U.S. House of Representatives’ IP address is not the first governmental address to have been blocked after accusations of disrupting Wikipedia. The IP address belonging to a subdivision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development in Alberta, Canada was blocked for three months since late 2005. An IP address belonging to the German Bundestag has been repeatedly blocked from the German Wikipedia after accusations of vandalism, including sexually explicit comments.

Marxists retain West Bengal, regain Kerala

Thursday, May 11, 2006Marxists retained West Bengal and regained Kerala in assembly elections in 5 Indian states whose results were declared today. Tamil Nadu is likely to have its first coalition government headed by DMK’s leader M Karunanidhi. Assam faces a hung assembly, while the Congress-led Front won overwhelmingly in Pondicherry

The Left Front, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), won 235 out of the total 294 assembly seats in West Bengal. West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has scored a thumping victory in Jadavpur, winning by a margin of over 58,000 votes.

“It is our victory. All credit goes to the people,” Bhattacharjee told reporters.

Veteran CPI(M) leader and previous Chief Minister Jyoti Basu hailed the ruling Left Front’s “march to power” in West Bengal for the seventh successive term as “unprecedented in parliamentary history”. Basu was Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000.

Tamil Nadu is likely to have its first coalition government headed by DMK leader M Karunanidhi after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa is voted out of power. The DMK-led front won in 162 out of 230 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu. And for the fifth time, DMK chief M Karunanidhi is all set to become the chief minister of the state.

In Kerala, The Left Democratic Front was victorious in 98 seats out of 140 constituencies. The UDF, which came to power last time with 99 seats, won only 41 seats.

Assam is heading for a hung assembly, whereas in Pondicherry, a Union Territory of India, Indian National Congress-led Front won 20 of 30 seats.

The Ruby Mining Process}

 • Find Out More About:
 • Jacon

Submitted by: Rayaz Siddiqi

In todays article, we will give you a short introduction on how rubies are mined and the process involved.

The main methods of mining rubies are placer, underground mining and hydraulic mining; the method depends on how deep into the earth the rubies are situated. There are other methods which we will also briefly touch upon.

Placer Method of Mining

The placer method is also known as river panning and involves collecting the gemstones whilst washing away gravel from a river. creek or stream; an obvious pre-requisite of this is identifying the gravel which could possibly contain the rubies.

A large pan is filled with water and then it is shaken back and forth to ensure the heavy materials fall to the bottom of the pan; this is repeated until there is a small amount of concentrate left in the pan. Then this concentrate is moved to a smaller pan to see if there are any gems.

Hydraulic Mining

In hydraulic mining, very powerful jets of water are used to loosen the gems from the rocks. The water splits the rocks and washes large pieces downhill; this causes the gems to be separated. Due to its harmful effects on the natural environment, this type of mining is not used now.

Mountaintop Removal Mining

This method entails cleaning the mountaintop at the ground level by cutting down trees and shrubs. Dynamite is then used to blast the top of the mountain; the resulting large rocks are then scoured for the gemstones.

Underground Mining

This method of mining is used as an alternative to surface mining, which is often not possible. This is the most common way of finding gemstones, and involves miners digging underground until they find gemstones.

The main forms of underground mining are:

Borehole Mining

Holes are drilled very deep inside the land using very large bore drills. Then a plastic tube is passed through the hole, water is then pushed through this tube at very high speeds. This water breaks the rocks and forms muddy slurry, which is stored in tankers. The water is then separated from the slurry to leave gemstones.

Drift Mining

Drift mining is performed on the mountains and entails first identifying rocks which are below the side of the mountain. The opening s created are called tunnels, and the gemstones are derived from the materials that come through the tunnels down from the hills.

Shaft Mining

Vertical tunnels called shafts are created below the mountain when shaft mining is used. Miners move up and down one of the shafts and another shaft is used for bringing the material from below the ground. More tunnels are made for blasting the rocks and the gems are found from amongst the rocks.

Summary

In most of the mining methods we have discussed, rocks are broken down into small or medium chunks using explosives such as dynamite. These rocks are then processed to extract the gemstones. Once you have the raw gemstone, it can be cleaned, cut and polished to produce the finished article.
